Health Facilities in Isiolo County.

Isiolo County is located in the Eastern region of Kenya. In the 2022-2027 government, Dr. James Lowasa is serving as the Health Minister for Isiolo county. (This is as of November 2022). In the 2017-2022 government, Wario Galma held this position. Health Ministers are also known as ‘CEC Member for Health’ or CEC Representative for Health.

CEC stands for County Executive Committee. The committees’ chief executive is the county governor while the deputy chief executive is the deputy county governor. In addition to the health representative, the committee has other representatives (approximately ten in total). They represent other devolved functions listed here. Depending on the county, devolved roles are combined differently.

Isiolo County has 3 Sub-Counties:

• Garbatulla
• Isiolo
• Merti

In summary, Isiolo County has 79 health facilities spread across the 3 sub-counties. 12.7% of these are faith-based facilities (10) while 63.3% belong to the ministry of health (50). This leaves 1.3% under NGO’s (1) and 22.8% listed as private facilities (18). Kenya has a total of 14,251 health facilities. This translates to Isiolo County having 0.55% of the country’s Total Facilities.

In Garbatulla sub-county, there are 42 health facilities. This makes up 11% of the health facilities in Isiolo County and 0.29% of the total number in the country.

Garbatulla Town houses the following 3 Wards: Kinna, Garbatulla & Sericho.

In Isiolo sub-county, there are 46 health facilities. This makes up 58% of the health facilities in Isiolo County and 0.32% of the total number in the country.

Isiolo houses the following 5 Wards: Wabera, Bulla Pesa, Burat, Ngaremara & Oldonyiro.

In Merti sub-county, there are 13 health facilities. This makes up 16% of the health facilities in Isiolo County and 0.09% of the total number in the country.

Merti houses the following 2 Wards: Chari & Cherab.

In conclusion,

• There are a total of 10 wards in the 3 sub-counties of Isiolo County. Isiolo has the highest (5) number of wards while Merti has the lowest (2).
• Isiolo sub-county has the highest number (46) of health facilities (58% of Isiolo County & 0.32% of Kenya).
• Isiolo sub-county also has the highest number of:
  • Faith-Based Health Facilities (8 out of 10)
  • Ministry of Health Facilities (Public). (Total of 21 out of 50)
  • Private Health Facilities. (Total of 16 out of 18)
• Isiolo sub-county is the only one with an NGO Health Facility. (1)
