Kakamega County is located in the Western region of Kenya. In the 2022-2027 government, Dr. Bernard Wesonga is serving as the Health Minister for Kakamega county. (This is as of November 2022). In the 2017-2022 government, Collins Kizito Matemba held this position. Health Ministers are also known as ‘CEC Member for Health’ or CEC Representative for Health.
CEC stands for County Executive Committee. The committees’ chief executive is the county governor while the deputy chief executive is the deputy county governor. In addition to the health representative, the committee has other representatives (approximately ten in total). They represent other devolved functions listed here. Depending on the county, devolved roles are combined differently.
Kakamega County has 12 Sub-Counties:
- Butere
- Ikolomani
- Khwisero
- Likuyani
- Lugari
- Lurambi
- Malava
- Matungu
- Mumias East
- Mumias West
- Navakholo
- Shinyalu
In summary, Kakamega County has 374 health facilities spread across the 12 sub-counties. 7.2% of these are faith-based facilities (27) while 51.9% belong to the ministry of health (194). This leaves 1.3% under NGO’s (5) and 39.6% listed as private facilities (148). Kenya has a total of 14,251 health facilities. This translates to Kakamega County having 2.62% of the country’s Total Facilities.

In Butere sub-county, there are 30 health facilities. This makes up 8% of the health facilities in Kakamega County and 0.21% of the total number in the country.

In conclusion,
- There are a total of 60 wards in the 12 sub counties of Kakamega County. Malava has the highest (7) number of wards while Mumias East has the lowest (3).
- Lurambi has the highest number (53) of health facilities (14% of Kakamega County & 0.37% of Kenya).
- Khwisero has the highest number of Faith-Based Health Facilities. (Total of 4 out of 27)
- Malava has the highest number of Ministry of Health Facilities (Public). (Total of 27 out of 194)
- Lurambi has the highest number of NGO Health Facilities. (Total of 2 out of 5)
- Lurambi has the highest number of Private Health Facilities. (Total of 26 out of 148)
