Health Facilities in Kiambu County.

Kiambu County is located in the Central region of Kenya.  In the 2022-2027 government, Elias Mbuthia  is serving as the Health Minister for Kiambu county. (This is as of November 2022). In the 2017-2022 government, John Murega held this position. Health Ministers are also known as ‘CEC Member for Health’ or CEC Representative for Health.

CEC stands for County Executive Committee. The committees’ chief executive is the county governor while the deputy chief executive is the deputy county governor. In addition to the health representative, the committee has other representatives (approximately ten in total). They represent other devolved functions listed here. Depending on the county, devolved roles are combined differently.

Kiambu County has 12 Sub-Counties:

In summary, Kiambu County has 730 health facilities spread across the 12 sub-counties. 7.9% of these are faith-based facilities (58) while 16.3% belong to the ministry of health (119). This leaves 1.9% under NGO’s (14) and 73.8% listed as private facilities (539). Kenya has a total of 14,251 health facilities. This translates to Kiambu County having 5.12% of the country’s Total Facilities.

Let us look at the numbers in each sub-county.

In Gatundu North sub-county, there are 26 health facilities. This makes up 14% of the health facilities in Kiambu County and 0.18% of the total number in the country.

Gatundu North houses the following 4 Wards: Gituamba, Githobokoni, Chania & Mang’u .

In Gatundu South sub-county, there are 27 health facilities. This makes up 4% of the health facilities in Kiambu County and 0.19% of the total number in the country.

Gatundu South houses the following 4 Wards: Kiamwangi, Kiganjo, Ndarugu & Ngenda.

In Githunguri sub-county, there are 36 health facilities. This makes up 5% of the health facilities in Kiambu County and 0.25% of the total number in the country.

Githunguri houses the following 5 Wards: Githunguri, Githiga, Ikinu, Ngewa & Komothai.

In Juja sub-county, there are 92 health facilities. This makes up 13% of the health facilities in Kiambu County and 0.65% of the total number in the country.

Juja houses the following 5 Wards: Murera, Theta, Juja, Kalimoni & Witeithie.

In Kabete sub-county, there are 40 health facilities. This makes up 5% of the health facilities in Kiambu County and 0.28% of the total number in the country.

Kabete houses the following 5 Wards: Gitaru, Muguga, Nyathuna, Kabete & Uthiru.

In Kiambaa sub-county, there are 49 health facilities. This makes up 7% of the health facilities in Kiambu County and 0.34% of the total number in the country.

Kiambaa houses the following 5 Wards: Cianda, Karuri, Ndenderu, Muchatha & Kihara.

In Kiambu Town sub-county, there are 55 health facilities. This makes up 8% of the health facilities in Kiambu County and 0.39% of the total number in the country.

Kiambu Town houses the following 4 Wards: Ting’ang’a, Ndumberi, Riabai & Township.

In Kikuyu sub-county, there are 49 health facilities. This makes up 7% of the health facilities in Kiambu County and 0.34% of the total number in the country.

Kikuyu houses the following 5 Wards: Karai, Nachu, Sigona, Kikuyu & Kinoo.

In Lari sub-county, there are 40 health facilities. This makes up 5% of the health facilities in Kiambu County and 0.28% of the total number in the country.

Lari houses the following 5 Wards: Kinale, Kijabe, Nyanduma, Kamburu & Lari (Kirenga).

In Limuru sub-county, there are 44 health facilities. This makes up 6% of the health facilities in Kiambu County and 0.31% of the total number in the country.

Limuru houses the following 5 Wards: Bibirioni, Limuru Central, Ndeiya, Limuru East & Ngecha Tigoni.

In Ruiru sub-county, there are 117 health facilities. This makes up 16% of the health facilities in Kiambu County and 0.82% of the total number in the country.

Ruiru houses the following 8 Wards: Gitothua, Biashara, Gatongora, Kahawa (Sukari), Kahawa Wendani, Kiuu, Mwiki & Mwihoko.

In Thika Town sub-county, there are 155 health facilities. This makes up 21% of the health facilities in Kiambu County and 1.09% of the total number in the country.

Thika Town houses the following 5 Wards: Township, Kamenu, Hospital, Ngoliba & Gatuanyaga.

In conclusion,

• There are a total of 60 wards in the 12 sub counties of Kiambu County. Ruiru has the highest (8) number of wards while Gatundu North, Gatundu South & Kiambu have the lowest (4 each).
• Thika Town has the highest number (155) of health facilities (21% of Kiambu County & 1.09% of Kenya).
• Lari has the highest number of Faith-Based Health Facilities. (Total of 9 out of 58)
• Lari & Thika Town has the highest number of Ministry of Health Facilities (Public). (Total of 17 each out of 119)
• Thika Town has the highest number of NGO Health Facilities. (Total of 6 out of 14)
• Thika Town has the highest number of Private Health Facilities. (Total of 126 out of 539)
