Health Facilities in Mandera County.

Mandera County is located in the North-Eastern region of Kenya. In the 2022-2027 government, Mohamud Adan Mohamed is serving as the Health Minister for Mandera county. (This is as of November 2022). He held this position in the 2017-2022 government as well. Health Ministers are also known as ‘CEC Member for Health’ or CEC Representative for Health.

CEC stands for County Executive Committee. The committees’ chief executive is the county governor while the deputy chief executive is the deputy county governor. In addition to the health representative, the committee has other representatives (approximately ten in total). They represent other devolved functions listed here. Depending on the county, devolved roles are combined differently.

Mandera County has 6 Sub-Counties:

In summary, Mandera County has 216 health facilities spread across the 6 sub-counties. 0.5% of these are faith-based facilities (1) while 47.7% belong to the ministry of health (103). In Banissa sub-county, there are 21 health facilities. This makes up 10% of the health facilities in Mandera County and 0.15% of the total number in the country.

Banissa houses the following 5 Wards: Banissa, Derkhale, Guba, Malkamari & Kiliwehiri.

In Lafey sub-county, there are 14 health facilities. This makes up 6% of the health facilities in Mandera County and 0.10% of the total number in the country.

Lafey houses the following 5 Wards: Sala, Fino, Lafey, Waranqara & Alango Gof .

In Mandera East sub-county, there are 76 health facilities. This makes up 35% of the health facilities in Mandera County and 0.53% of the total number in the country.

Mandera East houses the following 5 Wards: Arabia, Libehia, Khalalio, Neboi & Township.

In Mandera North sub-county, there are 32 health facilities. This makes up 15% of the health facilities in Mandera County and 0.22% of the total number in the country.

Mandera North houses the following 5 Wards: Ashabito, Guticha, Morothile, Rhamu & Rhamu Dimtu.

In Mandera South sub-county, there are 39 health facilities. This makes up 18% of the health facilities in Mandera County and 0.27% of the total number in the country.

Mandera South houses the following 5 Wards: Wargadud, Elwak South, Elwak North, Shimbir Fatuma & Kutulo.

In Mandera West sub-county, there are 34 health facilities. This makes up 16% of the health facilities in Mandera County and 0.24% of the total number in the country.

Mandera West houses the following 5 Wards: Takaba South, Takaba, Lagsure, Dandu & Gither.

In conclusion,

• There are a total of 30 wards in the 6 sub-counties of Mandera County. Each sub county has 5 wards.
• Mandera East has the highest number (76) of health facilities (35% of Mandera County & 0.53% of Kenya).
• Mandera South is the only sub-county with a Faith-Based Health Facility. (Total of 1 out of 1)
• Mandera South has the highest number of Ministry of Health Facilities (Public). (Total of 22 out of 103)
• Mandera East has the highest number of Private Health Facilities. (Total of 57 out of 112)
• There are no NGO Health Facilities in Mandera County.
