Health Facilities in Narok County.

Narok County is located in the Rift-Valley region of Kenya.  In the 2022-2027 government, Morgan Siloma is serving as the Health Minister for Narok county. (This is as of November 2022). She also held this position in the 2017-2022 government. Health Ministers are also known as ‘CEC Member for Health’ or CEC Representative for Health.

CEC stands for County Executive Committee. The committees’ chief executive is the county governor while the deputy chief executive is the deputy county governor. In addition to the health representative, the committee has other representatives (approximately ten in total). They represent other devolved functions listed here. Depending on the county, devolved roles are combined differently.

Narok County has 6 Sub-Counties:

In summary, Narok County has 227 health facilities spread across the 6 sub-counties. 6.2% of these are faith-based facilities (35) while 56% belong to the ministry of health (127). This leaves 3.1% listed as private facilities (7) and 25.6% under NGO’s (58). Kenya has a total of 14,251 health facilities. This translates to Narok County having 1.59% of the country’s Total Facilities.

Let us look at the numbers in each sub-county.

In Narok East sub-county, there are 30 health facilities. This makes up 13% of the health facilities in Narok County and 0.21% of the total number in the country.

Narok East houses the following 4 Wards: Mosiro, Ildamat, Keekonyokie & Suswa.

In Narok North sub-county, there are 51 health facilities. This makes up 22% of the health facilities in Narok County and 0.36% of the total number in the country.

Narok North houses the following 6 Wards: Olpusimoru, Olokurto, Narok Town, Nkareta, Olorropil & Melili.

In Narok South sub-county, there are 28 health facilities. This makes up 12% of the health facilities in Narok County and 0.20% of the total number in the country.

Narok South houses the following 6 Wards: Majimoto (Naroosura), Ololulung’a, Melelo, Loita, Sogoo & Sagamian.

In Narok West sub-county, there are 43 health facilities. This makes up 19% of the health facilities in Narok County and 0.30% of the total number in the country.

Narok West houses the following 4 Wards: Ilmotiok, Mara, Siana & Naikarra.

In Emurua Dikirr (Transmara East) sub-county, there are 23 health facilities. This makes up 10% of the health facilities in Narok County and 0.16% of the total number in the country.

Emurua Dikirr (Transmara East) houses the following 4 Wards: Ilkerin, Oloimasani, Mogondo, Kapsasian.

In Kilgoris (Transmara West) sub-county, there are 52 health facilities. This makes up 23% of the health facilities in Narok County and 0.36% of the total number in the country.

Kilgoris (Transmara West) houses the following 6 Wards: Kilgoris Central, Keyian, Angata Barikoi, Shankoe, Kimintet & Lolgorian.

In conclusion,

• There are a total of 30 wards in the 6 sub-counties of Narok County. Kilgoris, Narok North & Narok South each have the highest (6) number of wards while Narok East, Narok West & Emurua Dikirr each have the lowest (4).
• Kilgoris has the highest number (52) of health facilities (23% of Narok County & 0.36% of Kenya).
• Narok West has the highest number of Faith-Based Health Facilities. (Total of 12 out of 35)
• Kilgoris has the highest number of Ministry of Health Facilities (Public). (Total of 33 out of 127)
• Narok West each have the highest number of NGO Health Facilities. (Total of 4 out of 7)
• Narok North has the highest number of Private Health Facilities. (Total of 24 out of 58)
