Health Facilities in Trans Nzoia County.

Trans Nzoia County is located in the Rift-Valley region of Kenya.  In the 2022-2027 government, Pepela Wanjala is serving as the Health Minister for Trans Nzoia county. (This is as of November 2022). In the 2017-2022 government, Claire Namenge Sifuna held this position. Health Ministers are also known as ‘CEC Member for Health’ or CEC Representative for Health.

CEC stands for County Executive Committee. The committees’ chief executive is the county governor while the deputy chief executive is the deputy county governor. In addition to the health representative, the committee has other representatives (approximately ten in total). They represent other devolved functions listed here. Depending on the county, devolved roles are combined differently.

Trans Nzoia County has 5 Sub-Counties:

1. Cherangany
2. Endebess
3. Kiminini
4. Kwanza
5. Saboti

In summary, Trans Nzoia County has 204 health facilities spread across the 5 sub-counties. 5.9% of these are faith-based facilities (12) while 42.6% belong to the ministry of health (87). This leaves 48.5% listed as private facilities (99) and 2.9% under NGO’s (6). Kenya has a total of 14,251 health facilities. This translates to Trans Nzoia County having 1.43% of the country’s Total Facilities.

Let us look at the numbers in each sub-county.

In Cherangany sub-county, there are 43 health facilities. This makes up 21% of the health facilities in Trans Nzoia County and 0.30% of the total number in the country.

Cheragany houses the following 7 Wards: Sinyerere, Makutano, Kaplamai, Motosiet, Cherangany (Suwerwa), Chepsiro (Kiptoror) & Sitatunga.

In Endebess sub-county, there are 17 health facilities. This makes up 8% of the health facilities in Trans Nzoia County and 0.12% of the total number in the country.

Endebess houses the following 3 Wards: Chepchoina, Endebess & Matumbei.

In Kiminini sub-county, there are 38 health facilities. This makes up 19% of the health facilities in Trans Nzoia County and 0.27% of the total number in the country.

Kiminini houses the following 6 Wards: Kiminini, Waitaluk, Sirende, Hospital, Sikhendu & Nabiswa.

In Kwanza sub-county, there are 33 health facilities. This makes up 16% of the health facilities in Trans Nzoia County and 0.23% of the total number in the country.

Kwanza houses the following 4 Wards: Kapomboi, Kwanza, Keiyo & Bidii.

In Saboti sub-county, there are 73 health facilities. This makes up 36% of the health facilities in Trans Nzoia County and 0.51% of the total number in the country.

Saboti houses the following 5 Wards: Kinyoro, Matisi, Tuwani, Saboti & Machewa.

In conclusion,

• There are a total of 21 wards in the 5 sub-counties of Trans Nzoia County. Cherangany has the highest (6) number of wards while Endebess has the lowest (3).
• Saboti has the highest number (73) of health facilities (36% of Trans Nzoia County & 0.51% of Kenya).
• Cherangany has the highest number of Faith-Based Health Facilities. (Total of 5 out of 12)
• Cherangany has the highest number of Ministry of Health Facilities (Public). (Total of 23 out of 87)
• Saboti has the highest number of NGO Health Facilities. (Total of 4 out of 6)
• Saboti has the highest number of Private Health Facilities. (Total of 50 out of 99)
