Health Facilities in Baringo County.

Baringo County is located in the Rift-Valley region of Kenya. In the 2022-2027 government, Solomon Sirma is serving as the Health Minister for Baringo county. (This is as of November 2022). In the 2017-2022 government, Richard Rotich held this position. Health Ministers are also known as ‘CEC Member for Health’ or CEC Representative for Health.

CEC stands for County Executive Committee. The committees’ chief executive is the county governor while the deputy chief executive is the deputy county governor. In addition to the health representative, the committee has other representatives (approximately ten in total). They represent other devolved functions listed here. Depending on the county, devolved roles are combined differently.

Baringo County has 6 Sub-Counties:

1. Baringo Central
2. Baringo North
3. Tiaty (East Pokot / Tiaty East)
4. Eldama Ravine (Koibatek)
5. Baringo South (Marigat)
6. Mogotio

In summary, Baringo County has 283 health facilities spread across the 6 sub-counties. 4.9% of these are faith-based facilities (14) while 80.2% belong to the ministry of health (227). This leaves 0.7% under NGO’s (2) and 14.1% listed as private facilities (40). Kenya has a total of 14,251 health facilities. Therefore, these figures translate to Baringo County having 1.99% of the country’s Total Facilities.

Let us look at the numbers in each sub-county.

In Baringo Central sub-county, there are 48 health facilities. This makes up 17% of the health facilities in Baringo County and 0.34% of the total number in the country.

Baringo Central houses the following 5 Wards: Kabarnet, Sacho, Tenges, Kapropita & Ewalel Chapchap.

In Baringo North sub-county, there are 58 health facilities. This makes up 20% of the health facilities in Baringo County and 0.41% of the total number in the country.

Baringo North houses the following 5 Wards: Barwessa, Saimo (Kipsaraman), Saimo (Soi), Kabrtonjo & Bartabwa.

In Tiaty (East Pokot / Tiaty East) sub-county, there are 46 health facilities. This makes up 16% of the health facilities in Baringo County and 0.32% of the total number in the country.

Tiaty (East Pokot / Tiaty East) houses the following 7 Wards: Silale, Kolowa, Ribkwo, Tirioko, Loiyamorock, Tangulbei (Korossi) & Churo (Amaya).

In Eldama Ravine (Koibatek) sub-county, there are 41 health facilities. This makes up 14% of the health facilities in Baringo County and 0.29% of the total number in the country.

Eldama Ravine (Koibatek) houses the following 6 Wards: Ravine, Lembus, Lembus Kwen, Mumberes (Maji Mazuri), Koibatek & Lembus Perkerra.

In Baringo South (Marigat) sub-county, there are 47 health facilities. This makes up 17% of the health facilities in Baringo County and 0.33% of the total number in the country.

Baringo South (Marigat) houses the following 4 Wards: Marigat, Ilchamus, Mochongoi & Mukutani.

In Mogotio sub-county, there are 43 health facilities. This makes up 15% of the health facilities in Baringo County and 0.3% of the total number in the country.

Mogotio houses the following 3 Wards: Mogotio, Emining & Kisanana.

In conclusion,

• There are a total of 30 wards in the 6 sub-counties of Baringo County. Tiaty (East Pokot) & Mogotio have the highest (7) and lowest (3) number of wards respectively.
• Baringo North has the highest number (58) of health facilities (20% of Baringo County & 0.41% of Kenya).
• Tiaty has the highest number of Faith-Based Health Facilities. (Total of 7 out of 14)
• Baringo North has the highest number of Ministry of Health Facilities (Public). (Total of 55 out of 227)
• Baringo Central has the highest number of Private Health Facilities. (Total of 11 out of 40)
• Only Baringo Central and Tiaty have NGO Health Facilities. (1 each).
