Bungoma County is located in the Western region of Kenya. In the 2022-2027 government, Andrew Wekesa Wamalwa is serving as the Health Minister for Bungoma county. (This is as of November 2022). In the 2017-2022 government, Anthony Walela held this position. Health Ministers are also known as ‘CEC Member for Health’ or CEC Representative for Health.
CEC stands for County Executive Committee. The committees’ chief executive is the county governor while the deputy chief executive is the deputy county governor. In addition to the health representative, the committee has other representatives (approximately ten in total). They represent other devolved functions listed here. Depending on the county, devolved roles are combined differently.
Bungoma County has 9 Sub-Counties:
- Bumula
- Elgon (Cheptais)
- Kabuchai
- Kanduyi
- Kimilili
- Sirisia
- Tongaren
- Webuye East
- Webuye West
In summary, Bungoma County has 275 health facilities spread across the 9 sub-counties. 8% of these are faith-based facilities (22) while 56% belong to the ministry of health (154). This leaves 1.5% under NGO’s (4) and 34.5% listed as private facilities (95). Kenya has a total of 14,251 health facilities. This translates to Bungoma County having 1.93% of the country’s Total Facilities.

In Bumula sub-county, there are 25 health facilities. This makes up 9% of the health facilities in Bungoma County and 0.18% of the total number in the country.

In conclusion,
- There are a total of 45 wards in the 9 sub-counties of Bungoma County. Kanduyi has the highest (8) number of wards while both Webuye East & Sirisia have the lowest ( 3 each).
- Kanduyi has the highest number (58) of health facilities (21% of Bungoma County & 0.41% of Kenya).
- Both Bumula & Kanduyi have the highest number of Faith-Based Health Facilities. (4 out of 22)
- Tongaren has the highest number of Ministry of Health Facilities (Public). (Total of 19 out of 154)
- Kanduyi has the highest number of Private Health Facilities. (Total of 34 out of 95)
- Kanduyi has the highest number of NGO Health Facilities. (Total of 2 out of 4)
