Health Facilities in Busia County.

Busia County is located in the Western region of Kenya.  In the 2022-2027 government, Dr. Olango Onudi is serving as the Health Minister for Busia county. (This is as of November 2022). In the 2017-2022 government, Moses Mulomi Okhoba held this position. Health Ministers are also known as ‘CEC Member for Health’ or CEC Representative for Health.

CEC stands for County Executive Committee. The committees’ chief executive is the county governor while the deputy chief executive is the deputy county governor. In addition to the health representative, the committee has other representatives (approximately ten in total). They represent other devolved functions listed here. Depending on the county, devolved roles are combined differently.

Busia County has 7 Sub-Counties:

In summary, Busia County has 193 health facilities spread across the 7 sub-counties. 6.7% of these are faith-based facilities (13) while 50.8% belong to the ministry of health (98). This leaves 4.7% under NGO’s (9) and 37.8% listed as private facilities (73). Kenya has a total of 14,251 health facilities. This translates to Busia County having 1.35% of the country’s Total Facilities.

Let us look at the numbers in each sub-county.

In Bunyala (Budalangi) sub-county, there are 11 health facilities. This makes up 6% of the health facilities in Busia County and 0.08% of the total number in the country.

Bunyala (Budalangi) houses the following 4 Wards: Bunyala West, Bunyala Central, Bunyala South & Bunyala North.

In Butula sub-county, there are 29 health facilities. This makes up 15% of the health facilities in Busia County and 0.2% of the total number in the country.

Butula houses the following 6 Wards: Marachi West, Marachi North, Marachi Central, Kingandole & Elugulu.

In Matayos sub-county, there are 51 health facilities. This makes up 26% of the health facilities in Busia County and 0.36% of the total number in the country.

Matayos houses the following 5 Wards: Mayenje, Burumba, Matayos South, Busibwabo & Bukhayo West.

In Nambale sub-county, there are 18 health facilities. This makes up 9% of the health facilities in Busia County and 0.13% of the total number in the country.

In Samia sub-county, there are 18 health facilities. This makes up 9% of the health facilities in Busia County and 0.13% of the total number in the country.

Samia houses the following 4 Wards: Kibingei, Kimilili, Maeni & Kamukuywa.

In Teso North sub-county, there are 32 health facilities. This makes up 17% of the health facilities in Busia County and 0.22% of the total number in the country.

Teso North houses the following 6 Wards: Malaba South, Malaba Central, Malaba North, Ang’urai East, Ang’urai South & Ang’urai North.

In Teso South sub-county, there are 34 health facilities. This makes up 18% of the health facilities in Busia County and 0.24% of the total number in the country.

Teso South houses the following 6 Wards: Amukura West, Amukura East, Amukura Central, Angorom, Chakol North & Chakol South.

In conclusion,

1. There are a total of 35 wards in the 7 sub-counties of Busia County. Teso North, Teso South & Kanduyi have the highest (6 each) number of wards while Bunyala, Nambale & Samia have the lowest (4 each).
2. Matayos has the highest number (51) of health facilities (26% of Busia County & 0.36% of Kenya).
3. Butula has the highest number of Faith-Based Health Facilities. (4 out of 13)
4. Teso South & Butula both have the highest number of Ministry of Health Facilities (Public). (18 each out of 98)
5. Matayos has the highest number of Private Health Facilities. (Total of 34 out of 73)
6. Teso North & Teso South both have the highest number of NGO Health Facilities. (3 each out of 9)
