Health Facilities in Elgeyo Marakwet County.

Elgeyo Marakwet County is located in the Rift-Valley region of Kenya. In the 2022-2027 government, Michael Kibiwott is serving as the Health Minister for Elgeyo Marakwet county. (This is as of November 2022). In the 2017-2022 government, Abraham Barsosio held this position. Health Ministers are also known as ‘CEC Member for Health’ or CEC Representative for Health.

CEC stands for County Executive Committee. The committees’ chief executive is the county governor while the deputy chief executive is the deputy county governor. In addition to the health representative, the committee has other representatives (approximately ten in total). They represent other devolved functions listed here. Depending on the county, devolved roles are combined differently.

In summary, Elgeyo Marakwet County has 147 health facilities spread across the 4 sub-counties. 6.8% of these are faith-based facilities (10) while 86.4% belong to the ministry of health (127). This leaves 6.8% listed as private facilities (10) and none (0) under NGO’s. Kenya has a total of 14,251 health facilities. This translates to Elgeyo Marakwet County having 1.03% of the country’s Total Facilities.

In Keiyo North sub-county, there are 27 health facilities. This makes up 18% of the health facilities in Elgeyo Marakwet County and 0.19% of the total number in the country.

Keiyo North houses the following 4 Wards: Emsoo, Kamariny, Kapchemutwa & Tambach.

In Keiyo South sub-county, there are 41 health facilities. This makes up 28% of the health facilities in Elgeyo Marakwet County and 0.29% of the total number in the country.

Keiyo South houses the following 6 Wards: Kaptarakwa, Chepkorio, Soy North, Soy South, Kabiemit & Metkei.

In Marakwet East sub-county, there are 30 health facilities. This makes up 20% of the health facilities in Elgeyo Marakwet County and 0.21% of the total number in the country.

Marakwet East houses the following 4 Wards: Kapyego, Sambirir, Endo & Embobut (Embulot).

In Marakwet West sub-county, there are 49 health facilities. This makes up 33% of the health facilities in Elgeyo Marakwet County and 0.34% of the total number in the country.

Marakwet West houses the following 6 Wards: Kapsowar, Lelan, Sengwer, Cherang’any (Chebororwa), Moiben (Kuserwo) & Arror.

In conclusion,

1. There are a total of 20 wards in the 4 sub-counties of Elgeyo Marakwet County. Marakwet West & Keiyo South have the highest (6 each) number of wards while Keiyo North & Marakwet East have the lowest (4 each).
2. Marakwet West has the highest number (49) of health facilities (33% of Elgeyo Marakwet County & 0.34% of Kenya).
3. Marakwet East & Marakwet West both have the highest number of Faith-Based Health Facilities. (4 each out of 10)
4. Marakwet West has the highest number of Ministry of Health Facilities (Public). (42 each out of 127)
5. Keiyo North has the highest number of Private Health Facilities. (Total of 4 out of 10)
6. There are no NGO Health Facilities in Elgeyo Marakwet County.
