Garissa County is located in the North-Eastern region of Kenya. In the 2022-2027 government, Hubi Hussein is serving as the Health Minister for Garissa county. (This is as of November 2022). In the 2017-2022 government, Roble Nunow Said held this position. Health Ministers are also known as ‘CEC Member for Health’ or CEC Representative for Health.
CEC stands for County Executive Committee. The committees’ chief executive is the county governor while the deputy chief executive is the deputy county governor. In addition to the health representative, the committee has other representatives (approximately ten in total). They represent other devolved functions listed here. Depending on the county, devolved roles are combined differently.
Garissa County has 6 Sub-Counties:
- Balambala
- Dadaab
- Fafi
- Garissa (Dujis)
- Ijara (Hulugho)
- Lagdera
In summary, Garissa County has 202 health facilities spread across the 6 sub-counties. 1% of these are faith-based facilities (2) while 44.6% belong to the ministry of health (90). This leaves 5.9% under NGO’s (12) and 48.5% listed as private facilities (98). Kenya has a total of 14,251 health facilities. Therefore, these figures translate to Garissa County having 1.42% of the country’s Total Facilities.

In conclusion,
- There are a total of 30 wards in the 6 sub-counties of Garissa County. Lagdera & Dadaab have the highest (6) number of wards while Dujis & Ijara have the lowest (4).
- Garissa (Dujis) has the highest number (102) of health facilities (50% of Garissa County & 0.72% of Kenya).
- Garissa (Dujis) is the only sub-county with Faith-Based Health Facilities. (2)
- Balambala has the highest number of Ministry of Health Facilities (Public). (Total of 18 out of 90)
- Garissa (Dujis) has the highest number of Private Health Facilities. (Total of 85 out of 98)
- Dadaab has the highest number of NGO Health Facilities. (Total of 8 out of 12)
