Health Facilities in Homa Bay County.

Homa Bay County is located in the Nyanza region of Kenya.  In the 2022-2027 government, Roselyn Omollo is serving as the Health Minister for Homa Bay county. (This is as of November 2022). In the 2017-2022 government, Richard Otieno Muga held this position. Health Ministers are also known as ‘CEC Member for Health’ or CEC Representative for Health.

CEC stands for County Executive Committee. The committees’ chief executive is the county governor while the deputy chief executive is the deputy county governor. In addition to the health representative, the committee has other representatives (approximately ten in total). They represent other devolved functions listed here. Depending on the county, devolved roles are combined differently.

Homa Bay County has 8 Sub-Counties:

1. Homa Bay Town
2. Kabondo Kasipul
3. Karachuonyo
4. Mbita (Suba North)
5. Ndhiwa
6. Rachuonyo South (Kasipul)
7. Rangwe
8. Suba South

In summary, Homa Bay County has 387 health facilities spread across the 8 sub-counties. 8.3% of these are faith-based facilities (32) while 56.8% belong to the ministry of health (220). This leaves 5.7% under NGO’s (22) and 29.2% listed as private facilities (113). Kenya has a total of 14,251 health facilities. This translates to Homa Bay County having 2.72% of the country’s Total Facilities.

Let us look at the numbers in each sub-county.

In Homa Bay Town sub-county, there are 42 health facilities. This makes up 11% of the health facilities in Homa Bay County and 0.29% of the total number in the country.

Homa Bay Town houses the following 4 Wards: Homa Bay Central, Homa Bay Arujo, Homa Bay West & Homa Bay East.

In Kabondo Kasipul sub-county, there are 45 health facilities. This makes up 12% of the health facilities in Homa Bay County and 0.32% of the total number in the country.

Kabondo Kasipul houses the following 4 Wards: Kabondo East, Kabondo West, Kojwach & Kokwanyo (Kakelo).

In Karachuonyo sub-county, there are 55 health facilities. This makes up 14% of the health facilities in Homa Bay County and 0.39% of the total number in the country.

Karachuonyo houses the following 7 Wards: West Karachuonyo, North Karachuonyo, Central Karachuonyo, Kanyaluo, Kibiri, Wangchieng & Kendu Bay Town.

In Mbita (Suba North) sub-county, there are 57 health facilities. This makes up 15% of the health facilities in Homa Bay County and 0.40% of the total number in the country.

Mbita (Suba North) houses the following 5 Wards: Gembe, Lambwe, Kasgunga, Mfangano Island & Rusinga Island.

In Ndhiwa sub-county, there are 71 health facilities. This makes up 18% of the health facilities in Homa Bay County and 0.50% of the total number in the country.

Ndhiwa houses the following 7 Wards: Kabuoch North, Kabuoch South (Pala), Kanyadoto, Kanyamwa Kalogi, Kanyamwa Kosewe, Kanyikela & Kwabwai.

In Rachuonyo South (Kasipul) sub-county, there are 45 health facilities. This makes up 12% of the health facilities in Homa Bay County and 0.32% of the total number in the country.

Rachuonyo South (Kasipul) houses the following 5 Wards: West Kasipul, South Kasipul, Central Kasipul, East Kamagak & West Kamagak.

In Rangwe sub-county, there are 32 health facilities. This makes up 8% of the health facilities in Homa Bay County and 0.22% of the total number in the country.

Rangwe houses the following 4 Wards: West Gem, East Gem, Kagan & Kochia.

In Suba South sub-county, there are 40 health facilities. This makes up 10% of the health facilities in Homa Bay County and 0.28% of the total number in the country.

Suba South houses the following 4 Wards: Gwassi South, Gwassi North, Kaksingri West & Ruma Kaksingri.

In conclusion,

• There are a total of 40 wards in the 8 sub-counties of Homa Bay County. Ndhiwa & Karachuonyo both have the highest (7) number of wards while Kabondo Kasipul, Rangwe, Homa Bay Town & Suba South all have the lowest ( 4 each).
• Ndhiwa has the highest number (71) of health facilities (18% of Homa Bay County & 0.50% of Kenya).
• Rachuonyo South (Kasipul) have the highest number of Faith-Based Health Facilities. (6 out of 32)
• Karachuonyo has the highest number of Ministry of Health Facilities (Public). (Total of 40 out of 220)
• Ndhiwa has the highest number of Private Health Facilities. (Total of 20 out of 113)
• Mbita (Suba South) & Ndhiwa both have the highest number of NGO Health Facilities. (6 each out of 22)
