Health Facilities in Kajiado County.

Kajiado County is located in the Rift-Valley region of Kenya.  In the 2022-2027 government, Alex Kilowua is serving as the Health Minister for Kajiado county. (This is as of November 2022). In the 2017-2022 government, Esther Somoire held this position. Health Ministers are also known as ‘CEC Member for Health’ or CEC Representative for Health.

CEC stands for County Executive Committee. The committees’ chief executive is the county governor while the deputy chief executive is the deputy county governor. In addition to the health representative, the committee has other representatives (approximately ten in total). They represent other devolved functions listed here. Depending on the county, devolved roles are combined differently.

Kajiado County has 5 Sub-Counties:

In summary, Kajiado County has 395 health facilities spread across the 5 sub-counties. 5.8% of these are faith-based facilities (23) while 29.9% belong to the ministry of health (118). This leaves 2.3% under NGO’s (9) and 62% listed as private facilities (245). Kenya has a total of 14,251 health facilities. Therefore, these figures translate to Kajiado County having 2.77% of the country’s Total Facilities.

Let us look at the numbers in each sub-county.

In Kajiado Central sub-county, there are 50 health facilities. This makes up 13% of the health facilities in Kajiado County and 0.35% of the total number in the country.

Kajiado Central houses the following 5 Wards: Purko, Ildamat, Dalalekutuk, Matapato North & Matapato South.

In Kajiado East sub-county, there are 89 health facilities. This makes up 23% of the health facilities in Kajiado County and 0.62% of the total number in the country.

Kajiado East houses the following 5 Wards: Kaputei North, Kitengela, Oloosirkon (Sholinke), Kenyawa-Poka & Imaroro.

In Kajiado North sub-county, there are 138 health facilities. This makes up 35% of the health facilities in Kajiado County and 0.97% of the total number in the country.

Kajiado North houses the following 5 Wards: Olkeri, Ongata Rongai, Nkaimurunya, Oloolua & Ngong.

In Kajiado West sub-county, there are 61 health facilities. This makes up 15% of the health facilities in Kajiado County and 0.43% of the total number in the country.

Kajiado West houses the following 5 Wards: Keekonyoike, Iloodokilani, Magadi, Ewuaso, Oonkidong’i & Mosiro.

In Loitokitok (Kajiado South) sub-county, there are 57 health facilities. This makes up 14% of the health facilities in Kajiado County and 0.4% of the total number in the country.

Loitokitok (Kajiado South) houses the following 5 Wards: Entonet (Lenkisi), Mbirikani (Eselen), Keikuku, Rombo & Kimana.

In conclusion,

• The 5 sub-counties of Kajiado each have 5 wards. Kajiado therefore has a total of 25 wards.
• Kajiado North has the highest number (138) of health facilities (35% of Kajiado County & 0.97% of Kenya).
• Kajiado North has the highest number of Faith-Based Health Facilities. (Total of 7 out of 23)
• Kajiado West has the highest number of Ministry of Health Facilities (Public). (Total of 36 out of 118)
• Kajiado North has the highest number of Private Health Facilities. (Total of 121 out of 245)
• Kajiado North has the highest number of NGO Health Facilities. (4 out of 9).
