Health Facilities in Kakamega County.

Kakamega County is located in the Western region of Kenya.  In the 2022-2027 government, Dr. Bernard Wesonga is serving as the Health Minister for Kakamega county. (This is as of November 2022). In the 2017-2022 government, Collins Kizito Matemba held this position. Health Ministers are also known as ‘CEC Member for Health’ or CEC Representative for Health.

CEC stands for County Executive Committee. The committees’ chief executive is the county governor while the deputy chief executive is the deputy county governor. In addition to the health representative, the committee has other representatives (approximately ten in total). They represent other devolved functions listed here. Depending on the county, devolved roles are combined differently.

Kakamega County has 12 Sub-Counties:

In summary, Kakamega County has 374 health facilities spread across the 12 sub-counties. 7.2% of these are faith-based facilities (27) while 51.9% belong to the ministry of health (194). This leaves 1.3% under NGO’s (5) and 39.6% listed as private facilities (148). Kenya has a total of 14,251 health facilities. This translates to Kakamega County having 2.62% of the country’s Total Facilities.

Let us look at the numbers in each sub-county.

In Butere sub-county, there are 30 health facilities. This makes up 8% of the health facilities in Kakamega County and 0.21% of the total number in the country.

Butere houses the following 5 Wards: Marama West, Marama Central, Marenyo-Shianda, Marama North & Marama South .

In Ikolomani sub-county, there are 27 health facilities. This makes up 7% of the health facilities in Kakamega County and 0.19% of the total number in the country.

Ikolomani houses the following 4 Wards: Idakho South, Idakho East, Idakho North & Idakho Central.

In Khwisero sub-county, there are 30 health facilities. This makes up 8% of the health facilities in Kakamega County and 0.21% of the total number in the country.

Khwisero houses the following 4 Wards: Kisa North, Kisa East, Kisa West & Kisa Central.

In Likuyani sub-county, there are 29 health facilities. This makes up 8% of the health facilities in Kakamega County and 0.2% of the total number in the country.

Likuyani houses the following 5 Wards: Likuyani, Sango, Kongoni, Nzoia & Sinoko.

In Lugari sub-county, there are 39 health facilities. This makes up 10% of the health facilities in Kakamega County and 0.27% of the total number in the country.

Lugari houses the following 6 Wards: Mautuma, Lugari, Lumakanda, Chekalini, Chevaywa & Lwandeti.

In Lurambi sub-county, there are 53 health facilities. This makes up 4% of the health facilities in Kakamega County and 0.37% of the total number in the country.

Lurambi houses the following 6 Wards: Butsotso East, Butsotso South, Butsotso Central, Shieywe, Mahiakalo & Shirere.

In Malava sub-county, there are 36 health facilities. This makes up 10% of the health facilities in Kakamega County and 0.25% of the total number in the country.

Malava houses the following 7 Wards: West Kabaras, Chebuche, East Kabaras, Butali (Chegulo), Manda (Shivanga), Shirugu-Mugai & South Kabaras.

In Matungu sub-county, there are 27 health facilities. This makes up 7% of the health facilities in Kakamega County and 0.19% of the total number in the country.

Matungu houses the following 5 Wards: Koyonzo, Kholera, Khalaba, Mayoni & Namamali.

In Mumias East sub-county, there are 24 health facilities. This makes up 6% of the health facilities in Kakamega County and 0.17% of the total number in the country.

Mumias East houses the following 3 Wards: Lusheya-Lubinu, Malaha-Isongo-Makunga & East Wanga.

In Mumias West sub-county, there are 25 health facilities. This makes up 7% of the health facilities in Kakamega County and 0.18% of the total number in the country.

Mumias West houses the following 4 Wards: Mumias Central, Mumias North, Etenje & Musanda.

In Navakholo sub-county, there are 20 health facilities. This makes up 5% of the health facilities in Kakamega County and 0.14% of the total number in the country.

Navakholo houses the following 5 Wards: Ingotse-Matiha, Shinoyi-Shikomari-Esumeiya, Bunyala West, Bunyala East & Bunyala Central.

In Shinyalu sub-county, there are 34 health facilities. This makes up 9% of the health facilities in Kakamega County and 0.24% of the total number in the country.

Shinyalu houses the following 6 Wards: Isukha North, Murhanda, Isukha Central, Isukha South, Isukha East & Isukha West.

In conclusion,

• There are a total of 60 wards in the 12 sub counties of Kakamega County. Malava has the highest (7) number of wards while Mumias East has the lowest (3).
• Lurambi has the highest number (53) of health facilities (14% of Kakamega County & 0.37% of Kenya).
• Khwisero has the highest number of Faith-Based Health Facilities. (Total of 4 out of 27)
• Malava has the highest number of Ministry of Health Facilities (Public). (Total of 27 out of 194)
• Lurambi has the highest number of NGO Health Facilities. (Total of 2 out of 5)
• Lurambi has the highest number of Private Health Facilities. (Total of 26 out of 148)
