Health Facilities in Kilifi County.

Kilifi County is located in the Coast region of Kenya. In the 2022-2027 government, Peter Mwarogo is serving as the Health Minister for Kilifi county. (This is as of November 2022). In the 2017-2022 government, Charles Dadu Kharisa held this position. Health Ministers are also known as ‘CEC Member for Health’ or CEC Representative for Health.

CEC stands for County Executive Committee. The committees’ chief executive is the county governor while the deputy chief executive is the deputy county governor. In addition to the health representative, the committee has other representatives (approximately ten in total). They represent other devolved functions listed here. Depending on the county, devolved roles are combined differently.

Kilifi County has 7 Sub-Counties:

In summary, Kilifi County has 389 health facilities spread across the 7 sub-counties. 4.9% of these are faith-based facilities (19) while 41.1% belong to the ministry of health (160). This leaves 3.3% under NGO’s (13) and 50.6% listed as private facilities (197). Kenya has a total of 14,251 health facilities. Therefore, these figures translate to Kilifi County having 1.42% of the country’s Total Facilities.

Let us look at the numbers in each sub-county.

In Ganze sub-county, there are 39 health facilities. This makes up 10% of the health facilities in Kilifi County and 0.27% of the total number in the country.

Ganze houses the following 4 Wards: Bamba, Jaribuni, Sokoke & Ganze.

In Kaloleni sub-county, there are 48 health facilities. This makes up 12% of the health facilities in Kilifi County and 0.34% of the total number in the country.

Kaloleni houses the following 4 Wards: Mariakani, Kayafungo, Kaloleni & Mwanamwinga.

In Kilifi North sub-county, there are 69 health facilities. This makes up 18% of the health facilities in Kilifi County and 0.48% of the total number in the country.

Kilifi North houses the following 7 Wards: Dabaso, Sokoni, Tezo, Watamu, Matsangoni, Kibarani & Mnarani.

In Kilifi South sub-county, there are 67 health facilities. This makes up 17% of the health facilities in Kilifi County and 0.47% of the total number in the country.

Kilifi South houses the following 5 Wards: Chasimba, Junju, Mtepeni, Mwarakaya & Shimo la Tewa.

In Magarini sub-county, there are 66 health facilities. This makes up 17% of the health facilities in Kilifi County and 0.46% of the total number in the country.

Magarini houses the following 6 Wards: Adu, Garashi, Gongoni, Maarafa, Magarini & Sabaki.

In Malindi sub-county, there are 68 health facilities. This makes up 17% of the health facilities in Kilifi County and 0.48% of the total number in the country.

Malindi houses the following 5 Wards: Jilore, Kakuyuni, Ganda, Malindi Town & Shella.

In Rabai sub-county, there are 32 health facilities. This makes up 8% of the health facilities in Kilifi County and 0.22% of the total number in the country.

Rabai houses the following 4 Wards: Ruruma, Rabai (Kisurutuni), Kambe-Ribe & Mwawesa.

In conclusion,

• There are a total of 35 wards in the 7 sub-counties of Kilifi County. Kilifi North has the highest (7) number of wards while Kaloleni, Rabai & Ganze have the lowest (4 each).
• Kilifi North has the highest number (69) of health facilities (18% of Kilifi County & 0.48% of Kenya).
• Malindi, Kilifi North & Kilifi South sub-counties have the highest number of Faith-Based Health Facilities. (5 each out of 19)
• Magarini has the highest number of Ministry of Health Facilities (Public). (Total of 39 out of 160)
• Kilifi South has the highest number of Private Health Facilities. (Total of 47 out of 197)
• Malindi has the highest number of NGO Health Facilities. (Total of 5 out of 13)
