Health Facilities in Kisii County.

Kisii County is located in the Nyanza region of Kenya.  In the 2022-2027 government, Leah Ogega is serving as the Health Minister for Kisii county. (This is as of November 2022). In the 2017-2022 government, Sarah Angima Omache held this position. Health Ministers are also known as ‘CEC Member for Health’ or CEC Representative for Health.

CEC stands for County Executive Committee. The committees’ chief executive is the county governor while the deputy chief executive is the deputy county governor. In addition to the health representative, the committee has other representatives (approximately ten in total). They represent other devolved functions listed here. Depending on the county, devolved roles are combined differently.

Kisii County has 9 Sub-Counties:

In summary, Kisii County has 287 health facilities spread across the 9 sub-counties. 7% of these are faith-based facilities (20) while 55.7% belong to the ministry of health (160). This leaves 1% under NGO’s (3) and 36.2% listed as private facilities (104). Kenya has a total of 14,251 health facilities. This translates to Kisii County having 2.01% of the country’s Total Facilities.

Let us look at the numbers in each sub-county.

In Bobasi sub-county, there are 37 health facilities. This makes up 13% of the health facilities in Kisii County and 0.26% of the total number in the country.

Bobasi houses the following 8 Wards: Masige West, Masige East, Basi Central, Nyacheki, Bassi Bogetaorio, Bobasi Chache, Sameta (Mokwerero) & Bobasi (Bointagare).

In Bomachoge Borabu sub-county, there are 29 health facilities. This makes up 10% of the health facilities in Kisii County and 0.20% of the total number in the country.

Bomahoge Borabu houses the following 4 Wards: Borabu Masaba, Boochi Borabu, Bokimonge & Magenche.

In Bomachoge Chache sub-county, there are 21 health facilities. This makes up 7% of the health facilities in Kisii County and 0.15% of the total number in the country.

Bomachoge Chache houses the following 3 Wards: Majoge Basi, Boochi (Tendere) & Bosoti (Sengera).

In Bonchari sub-county, there are 23 health facilities. This makes up 8% of the health facilities in Kisii County and 0.16% of the total number in the country.

Bonchari houses the following 4 Wards: Bomariba, Bogiakumu, Bokeira & Riana.

In Kitutu Chache North sub-county, there are 15 health facilities. This makes up 5% of the health facilities in Kisii County and 0.11% of the total number in the country.

Kitutu Chache North houses the following 4 Wards: Monyerero, Sensi, Marani & Kegogi.

In Kitutu Chache South sub-county, there are 66 health facilities. This makes up 23% of the health facilities in Kisii County and 0.46% of the total number in the country.

Kitutu Chache South houses the following 5 Wards: Bogusero, Bogeka, Nyakoe, Kitutu Central & Nyatieko.

In Nyaribari Chache sub-county, there are 30 health facilities. This makes up 10% of the health facilities in Kisii County and 0.21% of the total number in the country.

Nyaribari Chache houses the following 6 Wards: Bobaracho, Kisii Central, Keumbu, Kiogoro, Birongo & Ibeno.

In Nyaribari Masaba sub-county, there are 27 health facilities. This makes up 9% of the health facilities in Kisii County and 0.19% of the total number in the country.

Nyaribari Masaba houses the following 5 Wards: Ichuni, Nyamasibi, Masimba, Gesusu & Kiamokama.

In South Mugirango sub-county, there are 39 health facilities. This makes up 14% of the health facilities in Kisii County and 0.27% of the total number in the country.

South Mugirango houses the following 6 Wards: Tabaka, Boikang’a, Bogetenga, Borabu-Chitago, Moticho & Getenga .

In conclusion,

• There are a total of 45 wards in the 9 sub-counties of Kisii County. Bobasi has the highest (8) number of wards while Bomachoge Chache has the lowest (3).
• Kitutu Chache South has the highest number (66) of health facilities (23% of Kisii County & 0.46% of Kenya).
• South Mugirango has the highest number of Faith-Based Health Facilities. (4 out of 20)
• Bobasi has the highest number of Ministry of Health Facilities (Public). (Total of 32 out of 160)
• Kitutu Chache South has the highest number of Private Health Facilities. (Total of 46 out of 104)
• Kitutu Chache South has the highest number of NGO Health Facilities. (Total of 2 out of 3)
