Health Facilities in Kitui County.

Kitui County is located in the Eastern region of Kenya. In the 2022-2027 government, Ruth Koki Mwanzia is serving as the Health Minister for Kitui county. (This is as of November 2022). In the 2017-2022 government, Winnie Syombua Kitetu held this position. Health Ministers are also known as ‘CEC Member for Health’ or CEC Representative for Health.

CEC stands for County Executive Committee. The committees’ chief executive is the county governor while the deputy chief executive is the deputy county governor. In addition to the health representative, the committee has other representatives (approximately ten in total). They represent other devolved functions listed here. Depending on the county, devolved roles are combined differently.

Kitui County has 8 Sub-Counties:

In summary, Kitui County has 505 health facilities spread across the 8 sub-counties. 6.5% of these are faith-based facilities (33) while 72.9% belong to the ministry of health (368). This leaves 20.6% listed as private facilities (104) and none under NGO’s. Kenya has a total of 14,251 health facilities. This translates to Kitui County having 3.54% of the country’s Total Facilities.

Let us look at the numbers in each sub-county.

In Kitui Central sub-county, there are 81 health facilities. This makes up 16% of the health facilities in Kitui County and 0.57% of the total number in the country.

Kitui Central houses the following 5 Wards: Miambani, Township, Kyangwithya West, Mulango & Kyangwithya East.

In Kitui East sub-county, there are 66 health facilities. This makes up 13% of the health facilities in Kitui County and 0.46% of the total number in the country.

Kitui East houses the following 6 Wards: Zombe (Mwitika), Nzambani, Chuluni, Voo (Kyamatu), Endau (Malalani) & Mutito (Kaliku).

In Kitui Rural sub-county, there are 51 health facilities. This makes up 10% of the health facilities in Kitui County and 0.36% of the total number in the country.

Kitui Rural houses the following 4 Wards: Kisasi, Mbitini, Kwavonza (Yatta) & Kanyangi.

In Kitui South sub-county, there are 70 health facilities. This makes up 14% of the health facilities in Kitui County and 0.49% of the total number in the country.

Kitui South houses the following 6 Wards: Ikanga (Kyatune), Mutomo, Mutha, Ikutha, Kanziko & Athi.

In Kitui West sub-county, there are 43 health facilities. This makes up 9% of the health facilities in Kitui County and 0.3% of the total number in the country.

Kitui West houses the following 4 Wards: Mutonguni, Kauwi, Matinyani & Kwa Mutonga (Kithumula) .

In Mwingi Central sub-county, there are 80 health facilities. This makes up 16% of the health facilities in Kitui County and 0.56% of the total number in the country.

Mwingi Central houses the following 6 Wards: Central, Kivou, Nguni, Nuu, Mui & Waita.

In Mwingi North sub-county, there are 61 health facilities. This makes up 12% of the health facilities in Kitui County and 0.43% of the total number in the country.

Mwingi North houses the following 5 Wards: Ngomeni, Kyuso, Mumoni, Tseikuru & Tharaka.

In Mwingi West sub-county, there are 53 health facilities. This makes up 10% of the health facilities in Kitui County and 0.37% of the total number in the country.

Mwingi West houses the following 4 Wards: Kyome (Thaana), Nguutani, Migwani & Kiomo (Kyethani).

In conclusion,

• There are a total of 40 wards in the 8 sub-counties of Kitui County. Kitui East, Kitui South & Mwingi Central have the highest (6) number of wards while Kitui Rural, Kitui West & Mwingi West have the lowest (4).
• Kitui Central has the highest number (81) of health facilities (16% of Kitui County & 0.57% of Kenya).
• Kitui Central has the highest number of Faith-Based Health Facilities. (6 out of 33)
• Kitui South has the highest number of Ministry of Health Facilities (Public). (Total of 57 out of 368)
• Kitui Central has the highest number of Private Health Facilities. (Total of 29 out of 104)
• Kitui County has no NGO Health Facilities.
