Health Facilities in Kwale County.

Kwale County is located in the Coast region of Kenya. In the 2022-2027 government, Francis Gwama is serving as the Health Minister for Kwale county. (This is as of November 2022). In the 2017-2022 government, he (Francis Gwama) also held this position. Health Ministers are also known as ‘CEC Member for Health’ or CEC Representative for Health.

CEC stands for County Executive Committee. The committees’ chief executive is the county governor while the deputy chief executive is the deputy county governor. In addition to the health representative, the committee has other representatives (approximately ten in total). They represent other devolved functions listed here. Depending on the county, devolved roles are combined differently.

Kwale County has 4 Sub-Counties:

In summary, Kwale County has 210 health facilities spread across the 4 sub-counties. 4.8% of these are faith-based facilities (10) while 65.2% belong to the ministry of health (137). This leaves 1.9% under NGO’s (4) and 28.1% listed as private facilities (59). Kenya has a total of 14,251 health facilities. Therefore, these figures translate to Kwale County having 2.77% of the country’s Total Facilities.

Let us look at the numbers in each sub-county.

In Kinango sub-county, there are 73 health facilities. This makes up 35% of the health facilities in Kwale County and 0.51% of the total number in the country.

Kinango houses the following 7 Wards: Ndavaya, Puma, Kinango, Mackinnon Road, Chengoni (Samburu), Mwavumbo & Kasemeni.

In Lunga Lunga sub-county, there are 37 health facilities. This makes up 18% of the health facilities in Kwale County and 0.26% of the total number in the country.

Lunga Lunga houses the following 4 Wards: Pongwe (Kikoneni), Dzombo, Mwereni & Vanga.

In Matuga sub-county, there are 53 health facilities. This makes up 25% of the health facilities in Kwale County and 0.37% of the total number in the country.

Matuga houses the following 5 Wards: Tsimba Golini, Waa, Tiwi, Kubo South & Mkongani .

In Msambweni sub-county, there are 47 health facilities. This makes up 22% of the health facilities in Kwale County and 0.33% of the total number in the country.

Msambweni houses the following 4 Wards: Gombato Bongwe, Ukunda, Kinondo & Ramisi.

In conclusion,

• There are a total of 20 wards in the 4 sub-counties of Kwale County. Kinango has the highest (7) number of wards while Lunga Lunga & Msambweni both have the lowest (4).
• Kinango has the highest number (73) of health facilities (35% of Kwale County & 0.51% of Kenya).
• Msambweni has the highest number of Faith-Based Health Facilities. (Total of 5 out of 10)
• Kinango has the highest number of Ministry of Health Facilities (Public). (Total of 55 out of 137)
• Msambweni has the highest number of Private Health Facilities. (Total of 21 out of 59)
• Msambweni has the highest number of NGO Health Facilities. (3 out of 4).
