Health Facilities in Laikipia County.

Laikipia County is located in the Rift-Valley region of Kenya. In the 2022-2027 government, Albert Wagurah Taiti is serving as the Health Minister for Laikipia county. (This is as of November 2022). In the 2017-2022 government, Rose Maitai held this position. Health Ministers are also known as ‘CEC Member for Health’ or CEC Representative for Health.

CEC stands for County Executive Committee. The committees’ chief executive is the county governor while the deputy chief executive is the deputy county governor. In addition to the health representative, the committee has other representatives (approximately ten in total). They represent other devolved functions listed here. Depending on the county, devolved roles are combined differently.

Laikipia County has 3 Sub-Counties:

1. Laikipia East
2. Laikipia North
3. Laikipia West

In summary, Laikipia County has 213 health facilities spread across the 3 sub-counties. 6.6% of these are faith-based facilities (14) while 41.3% belong to the ministry of health (88). This leaves 2.8% under NGO’s (6) and 49.3% listed as private facilities (105). Kenya has a total of 14,251 health facilities. Therefore, these figures translate to Laikipia County having 1.49% of the country’s Total Facilities.

In Laikipia East sub-county, there are 94 health facilities. This makes up 44% of the health facilities in Laikipia County and 0.66% of the total number in the country.

Laikipia East houses the following 5 Wards: Ngobit, Tigithi, Thingithu, Umande & Nanyuki.

In Laikipia North sub-county, there are 36 health facilities. This makes up 17% of the health facilities in Laikipia County and 0.25% of the total number in the country.

Laikipia North houses the following 4 Wards: Mugogodo East, Mugogodo West, Sosian & Segera.

In Laikipia West sub-county, there are 83 health facilities. This makes up 39% of the health facilities in Laikipia County and 0.58% of the total number in the country.

Laikipia West houses the following 6 Wards: Ol-moran, Rumuruti Township, Githiga, Marmanet, Igwamiti & Salama .

In conclusion,

• There are a total of 15 wards in the 3 sub-counties of Laikipia County. Laikipia West has the highest (6) number of wards while Laikipia North has the lowest (4).
• Laikipia East has the highest number (94) of health facilities (44% of Laikipia County & 0.66% of Kenya).
• Laikipia West has the highest number of Faith-Based Health Facilities. (Total of 7 out of 14)
• Laikipia West has the highest number of Ministry of Health Facilities (Public). (Total of 35 out of 88)
• Laikipia East has the highest number of Private Health Facilities. (Total of 56 out of 105)
• Laikipia East has the highest number of NGO Health Facilities. (5 out of 6).
