Health Facilities in Lamu County.

Lamu County is located in the Coast region of Kenya. In the 2022-2027 government, Dr. Mbarak Mohamed Mbarak is serving as the Health Minister for Lamu county. (This is as of April 2023). In the 2017-2022 government, Anne Gathoni Kabii held this position. Health Ministers are also known as ‘CEC Member for Health’ or CEC Representative for Health.

CEC stands for County Executive Committee. The committees’ chief executive is the county governor while the deputy chief executive is the deputy county governor. In addition to the health representative, the committee has other representatives (approximately ten in total). They represent other devolved functions listed here. Depending on the county, devolved roles are combined differently.

Lamu County has 2 Sub-Counties:

In summary, Lamu County has 65 health facilities spread across the 2 sub-counties. 3.1% of these are faith-based facilities (2) while 63.1% belong to the ministry of health (41). This leaves 3.1% under NGO’s (2) and 30.8% listed as private facilities (20). Kenya has a total of 14,251 health facilities. Therefore, these figures translate to Lamu County having 0.46% of the country’s Total Facilities.

In Lamu East sub-county, there are 15 health facilities. This makes up 23% of the health facilities in Lamu County and 0.11% of the total number in the country.

Lamu East houses the following 3 Wards: Faza, Kiunga & Basuba.

In Lamu West sub-county, there are 50 health facilities. This makes up 77% of the health facilities in Lamu County and 0.35% of the total number in the country.

Lamu West houses the following 7 Wards: Shella, Mkomani, Hindi, Mkunumbi, Hongwe, Witu & Bahari.

• There are a total of 10 wards in the 2 sub-counties of Lamu County. Lamu West has the highest (7) number of wards while Lamu East has the lowest (3).
• Lamu West has the highest number (50) of health facilities (77% of Lamu County & 0.35% of Kenya).
• Lamu West also has the highest number of:
  • Faith-Based Health Facilities. (Total of 2 out of 2)
  • Ministry of Health Facilities (Public). (Total of 26 out of 41)
  • Private Health Facilities. (Total of 20 out of 20)
  • NGO Health Facilities. (2 out of 2).
