Health Facilities in Machakos County.

Machakos County is located in the Eastern region of Kenya. In the 2022-2027 government, Daniel Yumbya is serving as the Health Minister for Machakos county. (This is as of November 2022). In the 2017-2022 government, Lucas Mwove held this position. Health Ministers are also known as ‘CEC Member for Health’ or CEC Representative for Health.

CEC stands for County Executive Committee. The committees’ chief executive is the county governor while the deputy chief executive is the deputy county governor. In addition to the health representative, the committee has other representatives (approximately ten in total). They represent other devolved functions listed here. Depending on the county, devolved roles are combined differently.

Machakos County has 8 Sub-Counties:

In summary, Machakos County has 467 health facilities spread across the 8 sub-counties. 6.2% of these are faith-based facilities (29) while 42.6% belong to the ministry of health (199). This leaves 49.9% listed as private facilities (233) and 1.3% under NGO’s (6). Kenya has a total of 14,251 health facilities. This translates to Machakos County having 3.28% of the country’s Total Facilities.

Let us look at the numbers in each sub-county.

In Mavoko (Athi River) sub-county, there are 110 health facilities. This makes up 24% of the health facilities in Machakos County and 0.77% of the total number in the country.

Mavoko (Athi River) houses the following 4 Wards: Athi River, Kinanie, Muthwani & Syokimau (Mulolongo).

In Kangundo sub-county, there are 30 health facilities. This makes up 6% of the health facilities in Machakos County and 0.21% of the total number in the country.

Kangundo houses the following 4 Wards: Kangundo North, Kangundo Central, Kangundo East & Kangundo West.

In Kathiani sub-county, there are 29 health facilities. This makes up 6% of the health facilities in Machakos County and 0.20% of the total number in the country.

Kathiani houses the following 4 Wards: Mitaboni, Kathiani Central, Upper Kaewa / Iveti & Lower Kaewa / Kaani.

In Machakos sub-county, there are 77 health facilities. This makes up 13% of the health facilities in Machakos County and 0.54% of the total number in the country.

Machakos houses the following 7 Wards: Kalama, Mua, Mutitini, Machakos Central, Mumbuni North, Muvuti (Kiima-Kimwe) & Kola.

In Masinga sub-county, there are 49 health facilities. This makes up 10% of the health facilities in Machakos County and 0.34% of the total number in the country.

Masinga houses the following 5 Wards: Kivaa, Masinga Central, Ekalakala, Muthesya & Ndithini.

In Matungulu sub-county, there are 57 health facilities. This makes up 12% of the health facilities in Machakos County and 0.40% of the total number in the country.

Matungulu houses the following 5 Wards: Tala, Matungulu North, Matungulu East, Matungulu West & Kyeleni.

In Mwala sub-county, there are 53 health facilities. This makes up 11% of the health facilities in Machakos County and 0.37% of the total number in the country.

Mwala houses the following 6 Wards: Mbiuni, Makutano (Mwala), Masii, Muthetheni, Wamunyu & Kibauni.

In Yatta sub-county, there are 62 health facilities. This makes up 13% of the health facilities in Machakos County and 0.44% of the total number in the country.

Yatta houses the following 5 Wards: Ndalani, Matuu, Kithimani, Ikomba & Katangi.

In conclusion,

• There are a total of 40 wards in the 8 sub-counties of Machakos County. Machakos has the highest (7) number of wards while Kangundo, Kathiani & Mavoko each have the lowest (4).
• Mavoko has the highest number (110) of health facilities (24% of Machakos County & 0.77% of Kenya).
• Mwala has the highest number of Faith-Based Health Facilities. (Total of 7 out of 29)
• Masinga has the highest number of Ministry of Health Facilities (Public). (Total of 38 out of 199)
• Mavoko has the highest number of Private Health Facilities. (Total of 87 out of 233)
• Mavoko has the highest number of NGO Health Facilities. (Total of 4 out of 6)
