Health Facilities in Makueni County.

Makueni County is located in the Eastern region of Kenya. In the 2022-2027 government, Dr. Paul Musila is serving as the Health Minister for Makueni county. (This is as of November 2022). In the 2017-2022 government, Adeline Mwau held this position. Health Ministers are also known as ‘CEC Member for Health’ or CEC Representative for Health.

CEC stands for County Executive Committee. The committees’ chief executive is the county governor while the deputy chief executive is the deputy county governor. In addition to the health representative, the committee has other representatives (approximately ten in total). They represent other devolved functions listed here. Depending on the county, devolved roles are combined differently.

In summary, Makueni County has 355 health facilities spread across the 6 sub-counties. 7.6% of these are faith-based facilities (27) while 67.9% belong to the ministry of health (241). In Kaiti sub-county, there are 39 health facilities. This makes up 11% of the health facilities in Makueni County and 0.27% of the total number in the country.

Kaiti houses the following 4 Wards: Ukia, Kee, Kilungu & Ilima.

In Kibwezi East sub-county, there are 50 health facilities. This makes up 14% of the health facilities in Makueni County and 0.35% of the total number in the country.

Kibwezi East houses the following 4 Wards: Masongaleni, Mtito Andei, Thange & Ivingoni (Nzambani).

In Kibwezi West sub-county, there are 76 health facilities. This makes up 21% of the health facilities in Makueni County and 0.53% of the total number in the country.

Kibwezi West houses the following 6 Wards: Emali (Mulala), Kikumbulyu North, Kikumbulyu South, Makindu, Nguu (Masumba) & Nguumo .

In Kilome sub-county, there are 40 health facilities. This makes up 11% of the health facilities in Makueni County and 0.28% of the total number in the country.

Kilome houses the following 3 Wards: Kasikeu, Mukaa & Kiima Kiu (Kalonzoni).

In Makueni sub-county, there are 93 health facilities. This makes up 26% of the health facilities in Makueni County and 0.65% of the total number in the country.

Makueni houses the following 7 Wards: Wote, Muvau (Kikumini), Mavindini, Kitise (Kithuki), Kathonzweni, Nzau (Kilili) (Kalamba) & Mbitini.

In Mbooni sub-county, there are 57 health facilities. This makes up 16% of the health facilities in Makueni County and 0.40% of the total number in the country.

Mbooni houses the following 6 Wards: Tulimani, Mbooni, Kithungo (Kitundu), Kiteta (Kisau),Waia (Kako) & Kalawa.

In conclusion,

• There are a total of 30 wards in the 6 sub-counties of Makueni County. Makueni has the highest (7) number of wards while Kilome has the lowest (3).
• Makueni has the highest number (93) of health facilities (26% of Makueni County & 0.65% of Kenya).
• Kilome has the highest number of Faith-Based Health Facilities. (Total of 8 out of 27)
• Makueni has the highest number of Ministry of Health Facilities (Public). (Total of 64 out of 241)
• Kibwezi West has the highest number of Private Health Facilities. (Total of 26 out of 83)
• Kibwezi West is the only sub-county with NGO Health Facilities. (Total of 4 out of 4)
