Muranga County is located in the Central region of Kenya. In the 2022-2027 government, Dr. Fredrick Mbugua is serving as the Health Minister for Muranga county. (This is as of November 2022). In the 2017-2022 government, James Gitau held this position. Health Ministers are also known as ‘CEC Member for Health’ or CEC Representative for Health.
CEC stands for County Executive Committee. The committees’ chief executive is the county governor while the deputy chief executive is the deputy county governor. In addition to the health representative, the committee has other representatives (approximately ten in total). They represent other devolved functions listed here. Depending on the county, devolved roles are combined differently.
Muranga County has 7 Sub-Counties:
- Gatanga
- Kandara
- Kangema
- Kigumo
- Kiharu
- Mathioya
- Muranga South
In summary, Muranga County has 376 health facilities spread across the 7 sub-counties. 10.1% of these are faith-based facilities (38) while 40.9% belong to the ministry of health (154). This leaves 0.5% under NGO’s (2) and 48.4% listed as private facilities (182). Kenya has a total of 14,251 health facilities. This translates to Muranga County having 2.64% of the country’s Total Facilities.

In Gatanga sub-county, there are 60 health facilities. This makes up 16% of the health facilities in Muranga County and 0.42% of the total number in the country.
Gatanga houses the following 6 Wards: Ithanga, Kakuzi (Mitubiri), Mugumu-Ini, Kithumbu-Ini, Gatanga & Kariara.

In conclusion,
- There are a total of 35 wards in the 7 sub counties of Muranga County. Gatanga, Kandara, Kiharu & Maragwa each have the highest (6) number of wards while Mathioya has the lowest (3).
- Kiharu has the highest number (95) of health facilities (25% of Muranga County & 0.67% of Kenya).
- Kiharu has the highest number of Faith-Based Health Facilities. (Total of 11 out of 38)
- Kiharu has the highest number of Ministry of Health Facilities (Public). (Total of 30 each out of 154)
- Gatanga & Maragwa each have 1 NGO Health Facilities.
- Kiharu has the highest number of Private Health Facilities. (Total of 54 out of 182)
