Health Facilities in Nakuru County.

Nakuru County is located in the Rift Valley region of Kenya. In the 2022-2027 government, Dr Samuel Mwangi Mwaura is serving as the Health Minister for Nakuru county. (This is as of November 2022). In the 2017-2022 government, Immaculate Njuthe held this position. Health Ministers are also known as ‘CEC Member for Health’ or CEC Representative for Health.

CEC stands for County Executive Committee. The committees’ chief executive is the county governor while the deputy chief executive is the deputy county governor. In addition to the health representative, the committee has other representatives (approximately ten in total). They represent other devolved functions listed here. Depending on the county, devolved roles are combined differently.

Nakuru County has 11 Sub-Counties:

In summary, Nakuru County has 648 health facilities spread across the 11 sub-counties. 8% of these are faith-based facilities (52) while 34.1% belong to the ministry of health (221). This leaves 2.6% under NGO’s (17) and 55.2% listed as private facilities (358). Kenya has a total of 14,251 health facilities. This translates to Nakuru County having 4.55% of the country’s Total Facilities.

In Gilgil sub-county, there are 83 health facilities. This makes up 13% of the health facilities in Nakuru County and 0.58% of the total number in the country.

Gilgil houses the following 5 Wards: Gilgil, Elementaita, Mbaruk (Eburu), Malewa West & Murindati.

In Kuresoi North county, there are 37 health facilities. This makes up 6% of the health facilities in Nakuru County and 0.26% of the total number in the country.

Kuresoi North houses the following 4 Wards: Kiptororo, Nyota, Sirikwa & Kamara.

In Naivasha sub-county, there are 104 health facilities. This makes up 16% of the health facilities in Nakuru County and 0.73% of the total number in the country.

Naivasha houses the following 8 Wards: Biashara, Hells Gate, Lake View, Mai Mahiu, Maiella, Olkaria, Naivasha East & Viwandani.

In Nakuru Town East sub-county, there are 97 health facilities. This makes up 15% of the health facilities in Nakuru County and 0.68% of the total number in the country.

Nakuru Town East houses the following 5 Wards: Biashara, Kivumbini, Flamingo, Menengai & Nakuru East.

Njoro houses the following 6 Wards: Mau Narok, Mauche, Kihingo, Nessut, Lare & Njoro .

In Rongai sub-county, there are 59 health facilities. This makes up 9% of the health facilities in Nakuru County and 0.41% of the total number in the country.

Rongai houses the following 5 Wards: Menengai West, Soin, Visoi, Mosop & Solai.

In Subukia sub-county, there are 34 health facilities. This makes up 5% of the health facilities in Nakuru County and 0.24% of the total number in the country.

Subukia houses the following 3 Wards: Subukia, Waseges & Kabazi.

In conclusion,

• There are a total of 55 wards in the 11 sub counties of Nakuru County. Naivasha has the highest (8) number of wards while Subukia has the lowest (3).
• Naivasha has the highest number (104) of health facilities (16% of Nakuru County & 0.72% of Kenya).
• Nakuru East has the highest number of Faith-Based Health Facilities. (Total of 7 out of 52)
• Gilgil, Njoro & Rongai each have the highest number of Ministry of Health Facilities (Public). (27 Each out of 221)
• Rongai & Naivasha each have the highest number of NGO Health Facilities. ( 5 Each out of 17)
• Nakuru East has the highest number of Private Health Facilities. (Total of 79 out of 358)
