Health Facilities in Nyamira County.

Nyamira County is located in the Nyanza region of Kenya.  In the 2022-2027 government,  Dr. Timothy Ombati is serving as the Health Minister for Nyamira county. (This is as of November 2022). In the 2017-2022 government, Gladys Momanyi held this position. Health Ministers are also known as ‘CEC Member for Health’ or CEC Representative for Health.

CEC stands for County Executive Committee. The committees’ chief executive is the county governor while the deputy chief executive is the deputy county governor. In addition to the health representative, the committee has other representatives (approximately ten in total). They represent other devolved functions listed here. Depending on the county, devolved roles are combined differently.

Nyamira County has 4 Sub-Counties:

In summary, Nyamira County has 199 health facilities spread across the 4 sub-counties. 8.5% of these are faith-based facilities (17) while 57.3% belong to the ministry of health (114). This leaves 32.7% listed as private facilities (65) and 1.5% under NGO’s (3). Kenya has a total of 14,251 health facilities. This translates to Nyamira County having 1.5% of the country’s Total Facilities.

In Borabu sub-county, there are 48 health facilities. This makes up 24% of the health facilities in Nyamira County and 0.34% of the total number in the country.

Borabu houses the following 4 Wards: Mekenene, Kiabonyoru, Nyasiongo & Esise.

In Kitutu Masaba (Manga, Masaba North) sub-county, there are 63 health facilities. This makes up 32% of the health facilities in Nyamira County and 0.44 of the total number in the country.

Kitutu Masaba (Manga, Masaba North) houses the following 6 Wards: Rigoma, Gachuba, Kemera, Magombo, Manga & Gesima.

In West Mugirango sub-county, there are 53 health facilities. This makes up 27% of the health facilities in Nyamira County and 0.37% of the total number in the country.

West Mugirango houses the following 5 Wards: Nyamaiya, Bogichora, Bosamaro, Bonyamatuta & Township.

In North Mugirango sub-county, there are 35 health facilities. This makes up 18% of the health facilities in Nyamira County and 0.25% of the total number in the country.

North Mugirango houses the following 5 Wards: Itibo, Bomwagamo, Bokeira, Magwagwa & Ekerenyo.

In conclusion,

• There are a total of 20 wards in the 4 sub-counties of Nyamira County. Kitutu Masaba has the highest (6) number of wards while Borabu has the lowest (4).
• West Mugirango has the highest number (53) of health facilities (27% of Nyamira County & 0.37% of Kenya).
• Borabu is has the highest number of Faith-Based Health Facilities. (Total of 6 out of 17)
• West Mugirango has the highest number of Ministry of Health Facilities (Public). (Total of 29 out of 114)
• North Mugirango has the highest number of NGO Health Facilities. (2 out of 3)
• West Mugirango has the highest number of Private Health Facilities. (Total of 20 out of 65)
