Health Facilities in Nyandarua County.

Nyandarua County is located in the Central region of Kenya. In the 2022-2027 government, Dr. Zakayo Gichuki is serving as the Health Minister for Nyandarua county. (This is as of November 2022). In the 2017-2022 government, John Njenga Mungai held this position. Health Ministers are also known as ‘CEC Member for Health’ or CEC Representative for Health.

CEC stands for County Executive Committee. The committees’ chief executive is the county governor while the deputy chief executive is the deputy county governor. In addition to the health representative, the committee has other representatives (approximately ten in total). They represent other devolved functions listed here. Depending on the county, devolved roles are combined differently.

Nyandarua County has 5 Sub-Counties:

In summary, Nyandarua County has 193 health facilities spread across the 5 sub-counties. 7.3% of these are faith-based facilities (14) while 44.6% belong to the ministry of health (86). This leaves 47.7% listed as private facilities (92) and 0.5% under NGO’s (1). Kenya has a total of 14,251 health facilities. In Kinangop sub-county, there are 62 health facilities. This makes up 32% of the health facilities in Nyandarua County and 0.44% of the total number in the country.

Kinangop houses the following 8 Wards: Engineer, Gathara, North Kinangop, Murungaru, Njabini (Kiburu), Nyakio, Githabai & Magumu.

In Kipipiri sub-county, there are 26 health facilities. This makes up 13% of the health facilities in Nyandarua County and 0.18 of the total number in the country.

Kipipiri houses the following 4 Wards: Wanjohi, Kipipiri, Geta & Githioro.

In Ol Kalou sub-county, there are 41 health facilities. This makes up 21% of the health facilities in Nyandarua County and 0.29% of the total number in the country.

Ol Kalou houses the following 5 Wards: Karau, Kanjuiri Range, Mirangine, Kaimbaga & Rurii.

Ol Jorok houses the following 4 Wards: Gathanji, Gatimu, Weru & Charagita.

In Ndaragwa sub-county, there are 33 health facilities. This makes up 17% of the health facilities in Nyandarua County and 0.23% of the total number in the country.

Ndaragwa houses the following 4 Wards: Leshau (Pondo), Kiriita, Central & Shamata.

In conclusion,

• There are a total of 25 wards in the 5 sub-counties of Nyandarua County. Kinangop has the highest (8) number of wards while Kipipiri, Ol Jorok & Ndaragwa each have the lowest (4).
• Kinangop has the highest number (62) of health facilities (32% of Nyandarua County & 0.44% of Kenya).
• Kinangop has the highest number of Faith-Based Health Facilities. (Total of 6 out of 14)
• Kinangop has the highest number of Ministry of Health Facilities (Public). (Total of 25 out of 86)
• Ol Kalou is the only sub-county with an NGO Health Facilities. (1 out of 1)
• Kinangop has the highest number of Private Health Facilities. (Total of 31 out of 92)
