Health Facilities in Nyeri County.

Nyeri County is located in the Central region of Kenya. In the 2022-2027 government, Dr. Joseph Kiragu is serving as the Health Minister for Nyeri county. (This is as of March 2023). In the 2017-2022 government, Robert Thuo held this position. Health Ministers are also known as ‘CEC Member for Health’ or CEC Representative for Health.

CEC stands for County Executive Committee. The committees’ chief executive is the county governor while the deputy chief executive is the deputy county governor. In addition to the health representative, the committee has other representatives (approximately ten in total). They represent other devolved functions listed here. Depending on the county, devolved roles are combined differently.

Nyeri County has 6 Sub-Counties:

In summary, Nyeri County has 448 health facilities spread across the 6 sub-counties. 7.4% of these are faith-based facilities (33) while 31.5% belong to the ministry of health (141). This leaves 59.2% listed as private facilities (265) and 2% under NGO’s (9). Kenya has a total of 14,251 health facilities. This translates to Nyeri County having 3.14% of the country’s Total Facilities.

Let us look at the numbers in each sub-county.

In Kieni sub-county, there are 85 health facilities. This makes up 19% of the health facilities in Nyeri County and 0.6% of the total number in the country.

Kieni houses the following 8 Wards: Mweiga, Naromoru (Kiamathaga), Mwiyogo (Endarasha), Mugunda, Gatarakwa, Thegu River, Kabaru & Gakawa.

In Mathira sub-county, there are 77 health facilities. This makes up 17% of the health facilities in Nyeri County and 0.54% of the total number in the country.

Mathira houses the following 6 Wards: Ruguru, Magutu, Iriaini, Konyu, Kirimukuyu & Karatina Town.

In Mukurweini sub-county, there are 51 health facilities. This makes up 11% of the health facilities in Nyeri County and 0.36% of the total number in the country.

Mukurweini houses the following 4 Wards: Gikondi, Rogi, Mukurweini West & Mukurweini Central.

In Othaya (Nyeri South) sub-county, there are 49 health facilities. This makes up 11% of the health facilities in Nyeri County and 0.34% of the total number in the country.

Othaya (Nyeri South) houses the following 4 Wards: Mahiga, Iria-ini, Chinga & Karima.

In Nyeri Town sub-county, there are 137 health facilities. This makes up 31% of the health facilities in Nyeri County and 0.96% of the total number in the country.

Nyeri Town houses the following 5 Wards: Kiganjo (Mathira), Rware, Gatitu (Muruguru), Rurung’u & Kamakwa (Mukaro).

In Tetu sub-county, there are 49 health facilities. This makes up 11% of the health facilities in Nyeri County and 0.34% of the total number in the country.

Tetu houses the following 3 Wards: Dedan Kimanthi, Wamagana & Aguthi-Gaaki.

In conclusion,

• There are a total of 30 wards in the 6 sub-counties of Nyeri County. Kieni has the highest (8) number of wards while Tetu has the lowest (3).
• Kieni has the highest number (85) of health facilities (19% of Nyeri County & 0.6% of Kenya).
• Nyeri Town has the highest number of Faith-Based Health Facilities. (Total of 9 out of 33)
• Nyeri Town has the highest number of Ministry of Health Facilities (Public). (Total of 28 out of 141)
• Nyeri Town each have the highest number of NGO Health Facilities. (Total of 5 out of 9)
• Nyeri Town has the highest number of Private Health Facilities. (Total of 95 out of 265)
