Health Facilities in Samburu County.

Samburu County is located in the Rift-Valley region of Kenya. In the 2022-2027 government, Lekudere Nassir is serving as the Health Minister for Samburu county. (This is as of November 2022). In the 2017-2022 government, Vincent Learaman held this position. Health Ministers are also known as ‘CEC Member for Health’ or CEC Representative for Health.

CEC stands for County Executive Committee. The committees’ chief executive is the county governor while the deputy chief executive is the deputy county governor. In addition to the health representative, the committee has other representatives (approximately ten in total). They represent other devolved functions listed here. Depending on the county, devolved roles are combined differently.

Samburu County has 3 Sub-Counties:

1. Samburu West
2. Samburu East
3. Samburu North

In summary, Samburu County has 137 health facilities spread across the 3 sub-counties. 8.8% of these are faith-based facilities (12) while 62.8% belong to the ministry of health (86). This leaves 27% listed as private facilities (37) and 1.5% under NGO’s (2). Kenya has a total of 14,251 health facilities. This translates to Samburu County having 0.96% of the country’s Total Facilities.

In Samburu West (Samburu Central) sub-county, there are 61 health facilities. This makes up 45% of the health facilities in Samburu County and 0.43% of the total number in the country.

Samburu West (Samburu Central) houses the following 5 Wards: Lodokejek, Suguta Marmar, Maralal, Loosuk & Poro.

In Samburu East sub-county, there are 36 health facilities. This makes up 26% of the health facilities in Samburu County and 0.25 of the total number in the country.

Samburu East houses the following 4 Wards: Waso, Wamba West, Wamba North & Wamba East.

In Samburu North sub-county, there are 40 health facilities. This makes up 29% of the health facilities in Samburu County and 0.28% of the total number in the country.

Samburu North houses the following 6 Wards: El-Barta, Nachola, Ndoto, Nyiro, Angata Nanyokie & Baawa.

In conclusion,

• There are a total of 15 wards in the 3 sub-counties of Samburu County. Samburu North has the highest (6) number of wards while Samburu East each have the lowest (4).
• Samburu West has the highest number (61) of health facilities (45% of Samburu County & 0.43% of Kenya).
• Samburu North has the highest number of Faith-Based Health Facilities. (Total of 6 out of 12)
• Samburu West has the highest number of Ministry of Health Facilities (Public). (Total of 32 out of 86)
• Samburu East & Samburu North are the only sub-counties with NGO Health Facilities. (each 1 out of 2)
• Samburu West has the highest number of Private Health Facilities. (Total of 25 out of 37)
