Health Facilities in Siaya County.

Siaya County is located in the Nyanza region of Kenya.  In the 2022-2027 government, Martin Odhiambo Konyango is serving as the Health Minister for Siaya county. (This is as of November 2022). In the 2017-2022 government, Dismas Wakla held this position. Health Ministers are also known as ‘CEC Member for Health’ or CEC Representative for Health.

CEC stands for County Executive Committee. The committees’ chief executive is the county governor while the deputy chief executive is the deputy county governor. In addition to the health representative, the committee has other representatives (approximately ten in total). They represent other devolved functions listed here. Depending on the county, devolved roles are combined differently.

Siaya County has 6 Sub-Counties:

In summary, Siaya County has 290 health facilities spread across the 6 sub-counties. 6.8% of these are faith-based facilities (20) while 59.7% belong to the ministry of health (173). This leaves 30% listed as private facilities (87) and 3.4% under NGO’s (10). Kenya has a total of 14,251 health facilities. This translates to Siaya County having 2.03% of the country’s Total Facilities.

Let us look at the numbers in each sub-county.

In Alego Usonga sub-county, there are 68 health facilities. This makes up 23% of the health facilities in Siaya County and 0.48% of the total number in the country.

Alego Usonga houses the following 6 Wards: Usonga, West Alego, Central Alego, Siaya Township, North Alego & South East Alego.

In Bondo sub-county, there are 63 health facilities. This makes up 22% of the health facilities in Siaya County and 0.44% of the total number in the country.

Bondo houses the following 6 Wards: West Yimbo, Central Sakwa, South Sakwa, Yimbo East, West Sakwa & North Sakwa.

In Gem sub-county, there are 49 health facilities. This makes up 17% of the health facilities in Siaya County and 0.34% of the total number in the country.

Gem houses the following 6 Wards: North Gem, West Gem, Central Gem, Yala Township, East Gem & South Gem.

In Rarieda sub-county, there are 46 health facilities. This makes up 16% of the health facilities in Siaya County and 0.32% of the total number in the country.

Rarieda houses the following 5 Wards: East Asembo, West Asembo, North Uyoma, South Uyoma & West Uyoma.

In Ugenya sub-county, there are 37 health facilities. This makes up 13% of the health facilities in Siaya County and 0.26% of the total number in the country.

Ugenya houses the following 4 Wards: West Ugenya, Ukwala, North Ugenya & East Ugenya.

In Ugunja sub-county, there are 52 health facilities. This makes up 23% of the health facilities in Siaya County and 0.36% of the total number in the country.

Ugunja houses the following 3 Wards: Sidindi, Sigomere & Ugunja.

In conclusion,

• There are a total of 30 wards in the 6 sub-counties of Siaya County. Alego Usonga, Bondo & Gem each have the highest (6) number of wards while Ugunja has the lowest (3).
• Alego Usonga has the highest number (68) of health facilities (23% of Siaya County & 0.48% of Kenya).
• Alego Usonga has the highest number of Faith-Based Health Facilities. (Total of 6 out of 20)
• Alego Usonga has the highest number of Ministry of Health Facilities (Public). (Total of 38 out of 173)
• Ugunja has the highest number of NGO Health Facilities. (Total of 5 out of 10)
• Bondo has the highest number of Private Health Facilities. (Total of 23 out of 87)
