Health Facilities in Taita Taveta County.

Taita Taveta County is located in the Coastal region of Kenya. In the 2022-2027 government, Gifton Mkaya is serving as the Health Minister for Taita Taveta county. (This is as of November 2022). In the 2017-2022 government, John Mwakima Mwangeka held this position. Health Ministers are also known as ‘CEC Member for Health’ or CEC Representative for Health.

CEC stands for County Executive Committee. The committees’ chief executive is the county governor while the deputy chief executive is the deputy county governor. In addition to the health representative, the committee has other representatives (approximately ten in total). They represent other devolved functions listed here. Depending on the county, devolved roles are combined differently.

In summary, Taita Taveta County has 128 health facilities spread across the 4 sub-counties. 7.8% of these are faith-based facilities (10) while 53.9% belong to the ministry of health (69). This leaves 36.7% listed as private facilities (47) and 1.6% under NGO’s (2). Kenya has a total of 14,251 health facilities. In Mwatate sub-county, there are 30 health facilities. This makes up 23% of the health facilities in Taita Taveta County and 0.21% of the total number in the country.

Mwatate houses the following 5 Wards: Rong’e, Mwatate, Bura, Chawia & Wusi (Kishamba).

In Taveta sub-county, there are 23 health facilities. This makes up 18% of the health facilities in Taita Taveta County and 0.16 of the total number in the country.

Taveta houses the following 5 Wards: Chala, Mahoo, Bomani, Mboghoni & Mata.

In Voi sub-county, there are 55 health facilities. This makes up 43% of the health facilities in Taita Taveta County and 0.39% of the total number in the country.

Voi houses the following 6 Wards: Mbololo, Sagalla, Kaloleni, Marungu, Kasigau & Ngolia.

In Wundanyi sub-county, there are 20 health facilities. This makes up 16% of the health facilities in Taita Taveta County and 0.14% of the total number in the country.

Wundanyi houses the following 4 Wards: Wundanyi (Mbale), Werugha, Wumingu (Kishushe) & Mwanda (Mgange).

In conclusion,

• There are a total of 20 wards in the 4 sub-counties of Taita Taveta County. Voi has the highest (6) number of wards while Wundanyi has the lowest (4).
• Voi has the highest number (55) of health facilities (43% of Taita Taveta County & 0.39% of Kenya).
• Voi has the highest number of Faith-Based Health Facilities. (Total of 6 out of 10)
• Mwatate & Voi each have the highest number of Ministry of Health Facilities (Public). (Total of 21 each out of 69)
• Voi is the only sub-county with NGO Health Facilities. (2 out of 2)
• Voi has the highest number of Private Health Facilities. (Total of 26 out of 47)
