Health Facilities in Uasin Gishu County.

Uasin Gishu County is located in the Rift-Valley region of Kenya. In the 2022-2027 government, Dr. Sam Kotut is serving as the Health Minister for Uasin Gishu county. (This is as of November 2022). In the 2017-2022 government, Everlyne C. Rotich held this position. Health Ministers are also known as ‘CEC Member for Health’ or CEC Representative for Health.

CEC stands for County Executive Committee. The committees’ chief executive is the county governor while the deputy chief executive is the deputy county governor. In addition to the health representative, the committee has other representatives (approximately ten in total). They represent other devolved functions listed here. Depending on the county, devolved roles are combined differently.

Uasin Gishu County has 6 Sub-Counties:

1. Ainabkoi
2. Kapseret
3. Kesses
4. Moiben
5. Soy
6. Turbo

In summary, Uasin Gishu County has 272 health facilities spread across the 6 sub-counties. 9.9% of these are faith-based facilities (27) while 52.9% belong to the ministry of health (144). This leaves 35.3% listed as private facilities (96) and 1.8% under NGO’s (5). Kenya has a total of 14,251 health facilities. This translates to Uasin Gishu County having 1.91% of the country’s Total Facilities.

In Ainabkoi sub-county, there are 53 health facilities. This makes up 19% of the health facilities in Uasin Gishu County and 0.37% of the total number in the country.

Ainabkoi houses the following 3 Wards: Kapsoya, Kaptagat & Ainabkoi (Olare).

In Kapseret sub-county, there are 40 health facilities. This makes up 15% of the health facilities in Uasin Gishu County and 0.28% of the total number in the country.

Kapseret houses the following 5 Wards: Simat (Kapseret), Kipkenyo, Ngeria, Megun & Langas.

In Kesses sub-county, there are 45 health facilities. This makes up 17% of the health facilities in Uasin Gishu County and 0.32% of the total number in the country.

Kesses houses the following 4 Wards: Racecourse, Cheptiret (Kipchamo), Tulwet (Chuiyat) & Tarakwa.

In Moiben sub-county, there are 44 health facilities. This makes up 16% of the health facilities in Uasin Gishu County and 0.31% of the total number in the country.

Moiben houses the following 5 Wards: Tembelio, Sergoit, Karuna (Meibeki), Moiben & Kimumu.

In Soy sub-county, there are 39 health facilities. This makes up 14% of the health facilities in Uasin Gishu County and 0.27% of the total number in the country.

Soy houses the following 7 Wards: Moi’s Bridge, Kapkures, Ziwa, Segero (Barsombe), Kipsomba, Soy, Kuinet (Kapsuswa).

In Turbo sub-county, there are 51 health facilities. This makes up 19% of the health facilities in Uasin Gishu County and 0.36% of the total number in the country.

Turbo houses the following 6 Wards: Ngenyilel, Tapsagoi, Kamagut, Kiplombe, Kapsoas & Huruma.

In conclusion,

• There are a total of 30 wards in the 6 sub-counties of Uasin Gishu County. Soy has the highest (7) number of wards while Ainabkoi has the lowest (3).
• Ainabkoi has the highest number (53) of health facilities (19% of Uasin Gishu County & 0.37% of Kenya).
• Turbo has the highest number of Faith-Based Health Facilities. (Total of 7 out of 27)
• Moiben has the highest number of Ministry of Health Facilities (Public). (Total of 31 out of 144)
• Ainabkoi has the highest number of NGO Health Facilities. (Total of 2 out of 5)
• Ainabkoi has the highest number of Private Health Facilities. (Total of 26 out of 96)
