Health Facilities in Wajir County.

Wajir County is located in North-Eastern Kenya. In the 2022-2027 government, Habiba Ali Maalim is serving as the Health Minister for Wajir county. (This is as of November 2022). In the 2017-2022 government, Ismail Sheikh Issack held this position. Health Ministers are also known as ‘CEC Member for Health’ or CEC Representative for Health.

CEC stands for County Executive Committee. The committees’ chief executive is the county governor while the deputy chief executive is the deputy county governor. In addition to the health representative, the committee has other representatives (approximately ten in total). They represent other devolved functions listed here. Depending on the county, devolved roles are combined differently.

Wajir County has 6 Sub-Counties:

In summary, Wajir County has 188 health facilities spread across the 6 sub-counties. 1.1% of these are faith-based facilities (2) while 74.5% belong to the ministry of health (140). This leaves 24.5% listed as private facilities (46) and none under NGO’s. Kenya has a total of 14,251 health facilities. Therefore, these figures translate to Wajir County having 1.3% of the country’s Total Facilities.

Let us look at the numbers in each sub-county.

In Eldas sub-county, there are 18 health facilities. This makes up 10% of the health facilities in Wajir County and 0.13% of the total number in the country.

Eldas houses the following 4 Wards: Eldas, Della, Lakoley South (Basir) & Elnur (Tula).

In Tarbaj sub-county, there are 27 health facilities. This makes up 14% of the health facilities in Wajir County and 0.19% of the total number in the country.

Tarbaj houses the following 4 Wards: Elben, Sarman, Tarbaj & Wargadud.

In Wajir East sub-county, there are 55 health facilities. This makes up 29% of the health facilities in Wajir County and 0.39% of the total number in the country.

Wajir East houses the following 4 Wards: Wagberi, Township, Barwaqo & Khorof Harar.

In Wajir North sub-county, there are 21 health facilities. This makes up 11% of the health facilities in Wajir County and 0.15% of the total number in the country.

Wajir North houses the following 7 Wards: Gurar, Bute, Korondille, Malkagufu, Batalu, Danaba & Godoma.

In Wajir South sub-county, there are 39 health facilities. This makes up 21% of the health facilities in Wajir County and 0.27% of the total number in the country.

Wajir South houses the following 7 Wards: Benane, Burder, Dadajabula, Habaswein, Lagbogol South, Ibrahim Ure & Diff.

In Wajir West sub-county, there are 28 health facilities. This makes up 15% of the health facilities in Wajir County and 0.2% of the total number in the country.

Wajir West houses the following 4 Wards: Abrajahan, Hadado (Athibohol), Adamasajide & Ganyure (Wagalla) .

In conclusion,

• There are a total of 30 wards in the 6 sub-counties of Wajir County. Wajir North & Wajir South each have the highest number of wards (7) while the rest have 4 each.
• Wajir East has the highest number (55) of health facilities (29% of Wajir County & 0.39% of Kenya).
• Wajir East is the only sub-county with Faith-Based Health Facilities. (Total of 2 out of 2)
• Wajir South has the highest number of Ministry of Health Facilities (Public). (Total of 31 out of 140)
• Wajir East has the highest number of Private Health Facilities. (Total of 32 out of 46)
• There are no NGO Health Facilities in Wajir County.
