West Pokot County is located in the Rift Valley region of Kenya. n the 2022-2027 government, Claire Chemtai Parklea is serving as the Health Minister for West Pokot county. (This is as of November 2022). In the 2017-2022 government, Christine Apakoreng held this position. Health Ministers are also known as ‘CEC Member for Health’ or CEC Representative for Health.
CEC stands for County Executive Committee. The committees’ chief executive is the county governor while the deputy chief executive is the deputy county governor. In addition to the health representative, the committee has other representatives (approximately ten in total). They represent other devolved functions listed here. Depending on the county, devolved roles are combined differently.
West Pokot County has 4 Sub-Counties:
- Kacheliba (Pokot North)
- Kapenguria (West Pokot)
- Sigor (Pokot Central)
- Pokot South
In summary, West Pokot County has 192 health facilities spread across the 4 sub-counties. 9.4% of these are faith-based facilities (18) while 77.6% belong to the ministry of health (149). This leaves 12% listed as private facilities (23) and 1% under NGO’s (2). Kenya has a total of 14,251 health facilities. In conclusion,
- There are a total of 20 wards in the 4 sub-counties of West Pokot County. Kacheliba & Kapenguria each have the highest (6) number of wards while Pokot South & Sigor each have the lowest (4).
- Kapenguria has the highest number (62) of health facilities (32% of West Pokot County & 0.44% of Kenya).
- Sigor has the highest number of Faith-Based Health Facilities. (Total of 6 out of 18)
- Kapenguria has the highest number of Ministry of Health Facilities (Public). (Total of 47 each out of 149)
- Kacheliba & Kapenguria are the only sub-counties with NGO Health Facilities. (1each out of 2)
- Kapenguria has the highest number of Private Health Facilities. (Total of 11 out of 23)
