Health Facilities in Nandi County.

Nandi County is located in the Rift-Valley region of Kenya.  In the 2022-2027 government, Ruth Koech is serving as the Health Minister for Nandi county. (This is as of November 2022). She also held this position in the 2017-2022 government. Health Ministers are also known as ‘CEC Member for Health’ or CEC Representative for Health.

CEC stands for County Executive Committee. The committees’ chief executive is the county governor while the deputy chief executive is the deputy county governor. In addition to the health representative, the committee has other representatives (approximately ten in total). They represent other devolved functions listed here. Depending on the county, devolved roles are combined differently.

Nandi County has 6 Sub-Counties:

In summary, Nandi County has 242 health facilities spread across the 6 sub-counties. 6.2% of these are faith-based facilities (15) while 62.4% belong to the ministry of health (151). This leaves 0.8% listed as private facilities (2) and 30.6% under NGO’s (74). Kenya has a total of 14,251 health facilities. This translates to Nandi County having 1.7% of the country’s Total Facilities.

Let us look at the numbers in each sub-county.

In Aldai sub-county, there are 48 health facilities. This makes up 20% of the health facilities in Nandi County and 0.34% of the total number in the country.

Aldai houses the following 6 Wards: Kabwareng, Terik, Kemoloi-Maraba, Kobujoi, Kaptumo-Kaboi & Koyo-Ndurio.

In Chesumei sub-county, there are 45 health facilities. This makes up 19% of the health facilities in Nandi County and 0.32% of the total number in the country.

Chesumei houses the following 5 Wards: Chemundu (Kapng’etuny), Kosirai, Lelmokwo (Ngechek), Kaptel (Kamoiywo) & Kiptuya.

In Emgwen sub-county, there are 40 health facilities. This makes up 17% of the health facilities in Nandi County and 0.28% of the total number in the country.

Emgwen houses the following 4 Wards: Chepkumia, Kapkangani, Kapsabet & Kilibwoni.

In Mosop sub-county, there are 33 health facilities. This makes up 14% of the health facilities in Nandi County and 0.23% of the total number in the country.

Mosop houses the following 7 Wards: Chepterwai, Kipkaren, Kurgung (Surungai), Kabiyet, Ndalat, Kabisaga, Sangalo (Kebulonik).

In Nandi Hills sub-county, there are 50 health facilities. This makes up 21% of the health facilities in Nandi County and 0.35% of the total number in the country.

Nandi Hills houses the following 4 Wards: Nandi Hills Chepkunyuk, Ol’Lessos & Kapchorua.

In Tinderet sub-county, there are 26 health facilities. This makes up 11% of the health facilities in Nandi County and 0.18% of the total number in the country.

Tinderet houses the following 4 Wards: Songhor (Soba), Tindiret, Chemelil (Chemase) & Kapsimotwo.

In conclusion,

• There are a total of 30 wards in the 6 sub-counties of Nandi County. Aldai has the highest (6) number of wards while Tinderet, Nandi Hills & Emgwen each have the lowest (4).
• Nandi Hills has the highest number (50) of health facilities (21% of Nandi County & 0.35% of Kenya).
• Mosop is has the highest number of Faith-Based Health Facilities. (Total of 5 out of 15)
• Aldai has the highest number of Ministry of Health Facilities (Public). (Total of 37 out of 151)
• Chesumei & Emgwen each have the highest number of NGO Health Facilities. (2 each out of 2)
• Nandi Hills has the highest number of Private Health Facilities. (Total of 33 out of 74)
