Health Facilities in Tharaka Nithi County.

Tharaka Nithi County is located in the Eastern region of Kenya. In the 2017-2022 government, Gichuyia Nthuraku M’Riara served as the Health Minister for Tharaka Nithi county. (This is as of April 2022). Health Ministers are also known as ‘CEC Member for Health’ or CEC Representative for Health.

CEC stands for County Executive Committee. The committees’ chief executive is the county governor while the deputy chief executive is the deputy county governor. In addition to the health representative, the committee has other representatives (approximately ten in total). They represent other devolved functions listed here. Depending on the county, devolved roles are combined differently.

Tharaka Nithi County has 6 Sub-Counties:

1. Chuka (Igamang’ombe)
2. Maara
3. Tharaka

In summary, Tharaka Nithi County has 191 health facilities spread across the 3 sub-counties. 16.2% of these are faith-based facilities (31) while 53.9% belong to the ministry of health (103). This leaves 27.2% listed as private facilities (52) and 2.6% under NGO’s (5). Kenya has a total of 14,251 health facilities. This translates to Tharaka Nithi County having 1.34% of the country’s Total Facilities.

In Chuka (Igamang’ombe) sub-county, there are 70 health facilities. This makes up 37% of the health facilities in Tharaka Nithi County and 0.49% of the total number in the country.

Maara houses the following 5 Wards: Mitheru, Muthambi, Mwimbi, Ganga & Chogoria.

In Tharaka sub-county, there are 57 health facilities. This makes up 30% of the health facilities in Tharaka Nithi County and 0.40% of the total number in the country.

Tharaka houses the following 5 Wards: Gatunga, Mukothima, Nkondi, Chiakariga & Marimanti.

In conclusion,

• There are a total of 15 wards in the 3 sub-counties of Tharaka Nithi County. Chuka has the highest (6) number of wards while Tharaka & Maara each have the lowest (5).
• Chuka has the highest number (70) of health facilities (37% of Tharaka Nithi County & 0.49% of Kenya).
• Chuka has the highest number of Faith-Based Health Facilities. (Total of 14 out of 31)
• Tharaka has the highest number of Ministry of Health Facilities (Public). (Total of 41 out of 103)
• Chuka has the highest number of NGO Health Facilities. (Total of 4 out of 5)
• Chuka has the highest number of Private Health Facilities. (Total of 23 out of 52)
