Health Facilities in Embu County.

Embu County is located in the Eastern region of Kenya. In the 2022-2027 government, Nicolas Kunga is serving as the Health Minister for Embu county. (This is as of November 2022). In the 2017-2022 government, Dr. John Mukundi held this position. Health Ministers are also known as ‘CEC Member for Health’ or CEC Representative for Health.

CEC stands for County Executive Committee. The committees’ chief executive is the county governor while the deputy chief executive is the deputy county governor. In addition to the health representative, the committee has other representatives (approximately ten in total). They represent other devolved functions listed here. Depending on the county, devolved roles are combined differently.

Embu County has 4 Sub-Counties:

In summary, Embu County has 218 health facilities spread across the 7 sub-counties. 7.8% of these are faith-based facilities (17) while 47.2% belong to the ministry of health (103). This leaves 0.9% under NGO’s (2) and 44% listed as private facilities (96). Kenya has a total of 14,251 health facilities. This translates to Embu County having 1.53% of the country’s Total Facilities.

Let us look at the numbers in each sub-county.

In Manyatta sub-county, there are 84 health facilities. This makes up 39% of the health facilities in Embu County and 0.59% of the total number in the country.

Manyatta houses the following 6 Wards: Ruguru (Ngandori), Kithimu, Nginda, Mbeti North, Kirimari & Gaturi South.

In Mbeere North sub-county, there are 33 health facilities. This makes up 15% of the health facilities in Embu County and 0.23% of the total number in the country.

Mbeere North houses the following 3 Wards: Nthawa, Muminji & Evurore.

In Mbeere South sub-county, there are 62 health facilities. This makes up 28% of the health facilities in Embu County and 0.44% of the total number in the country.

Mbeere South houses the following 5 Wards: Mwea, Amakim, Mbeti South, Mavuria & Kiambere.

In Runyenjes sub-county, there are 18 health facilities. This makes up 9% of the health facilities in Embu County and 0.13% of the total number in the country.

Runyenjes houses the following 6 Wards: Gaturi North, Kaagiri South, Kaagari North, Central Ward, Kyeni North & Kyeni South.

In conclusion,

1. There are a total of 20 wards in the 4 sub-counties of Embu County. Manyatta & Runyenjes have the highest (6 each) number of wards while Mbeere North has the lowest (3).
2. Manyatta has the highest number (89) of health facilities (39% of Embu County & 0.59% of Kenya).
3. Manyatta has the highest number of Faith-Based Health Facilities. (8 out of 17)
4. Mbeere South both have the highest number of Ministry of Health Facilities (Public). (31 each out of 103)
5. Manyatta has the highest number of Private Health Facilities. (Total of 48 out of 96)
6. Manyatta & Runyenjes are the only ones with NGO Health Facilities. (1 each out of 2)
