Embu County is located in the Eastern region of Kenya. In the 2022-2027 government, Nicolas Kunga is serving as the Health Minister for Embu county. (This is as of November 2022). In the 2017-2022 government, Dr. John Mukundi held this position. Health Ministers are also known as ‘CEC Member for Health’ or CEC Representative for Health.

CEC stands for County Executive Committee. The committees’ chief executive is the county governor while the deputy chief executive is the deputy county governor. In addition to the health representative, the committee has other representatives (approximately ten in total). They represent other devolved functions listed here. Depending on the county, devolved roles are combined differently.

Embu County has 4 Sub-Counties:

  • Manyatta
  • Mbeere North
  • Mbeere South
  • Runyenjes

In summary, Embu County has 218 health facilities spread across the 7 sub-counties. 7.8% of these are faith-based facilities (17) while 47.2% belong to the ministry of health (103). This leaves 0.9% under NGO’s (2) and 44% listed as private facilities (96). Kenya has a total of 14,251 health facilities.   1. There are a total of 20 wards in the 4 sub-counties of Embu County. Manyatta & Runyenjes have the highest (6 each) number of wards while Mbeere North has the lowest (3).
  2. Manyatta has the highest number (89) of health facilities (39% of Embu County & 0.59% of Kenya).
  3. Manyatta has the highest number of Faith-Based Health Facilities. (8 out of 17)
  4. Mbeere South both have the highest number of Ministry of Health Facilities (Public). (31 each out of 103)
  5. Manyatta has the highest number of Private Health Facilities. (Total of 48 out of 96)
  6. Manyatta & Runyenjes are the only ones with NGO Health Facilities. (1 each out of 2)
