Health Facilities in Kericho County.

Kericho County is located in the Rift-Valley region of Kenya.  In the 2022-2027 government, Ednah Chepkirui Tonui is serving as the Health Minister for Kericho county. (This is as of November 2022). In the 2017-2022 government, Barnabas Ngeno held this position. Health Ministers are also known as ‘CEC Member for Health’ or CEC Representative for Health.

CEC stands for County Executive Committee. The committees’ chief executive is the county governor while the deputy chief executive is the deputy county governor. In addition to the health representative, the committee has other representatives (approximately ten in total). They represent other devolved functions listed here. Depending on the county, devolved roles are combined differently.

Kericho County has 6 Sub-Counties:

In summary, Kericho County has 276 health facilities spread across the 6 sub-counties. 5.4% of these are faith-based facilities (15) while 62.7% belong to the ministry of health (173). This leaves 1.8% under NGO’s (5) and 30.1% listed as private facilities (83). Kenya has a total of 14,251 health facilities. Therefore, these figures translate to Kericho County having 1.94% of the country’s Total Facilities.

Let us look at the numbers in each sub-county.

In Ainamoi sub-county, there are 60 health facilities. This makes up 22% of the health facilities in Kericho County and 0.42% of the total number in the country.

Ainamoi houses the following 6 Wards: Ainamoi, Kipchichim, Kapsoit, Kapsoas, Kipchebor & Kapkugerwet.

In Belgut sub-county, there are 46 health facilities. This makes up 17% of the health facilities in Kericho County and 0.32% of the total number in the country.

Belgut houses the following 5 Wards: Cheptororiet (Seretut), Waldai, Kabianga (Chemamul), Chaik & Kapsuser.

In Bureti sub-county, there are 45 health facilities. This makes up 16% of the health facilities in Kericho County and 0.32% of the total number in the country.

Bureti houses the following 7 Wards: Litein, Kapkatet, Kisiara, Cheplanget, Tibesonik, Cheboin & Chemosot.

In Kipkelion East sub-county, there are 39 health facilities. This makes up 14% of the health facilities in Kericho County and 0.27% of the total number in the country.

Kipkelion East houses the following 4 Wards: Chepseon, Kedowa (Kimugul), Tendeno (Sorget) & Londiani.

In Kipkelion West sub-county, there are 34 health facilities. This makes up 12% of the health facilities in Kericho County and 0.24% of the total number in the country.

Kipkelion West houses the following 4 Wards: Kipkelion, Kunyak, Chilchila & Kamasian.

In Sigowet (Soin) sub-county, there are 52 health facilities. This makes up 19% of the health facilities in Kericho County and 0.36% of the total number in the country.

Sigowet (Soin) houses the following 4 Wards: Soliat, Soin, Kaplelartet & Sigowet.

In conclusion,

• There are a total of 30 wards in the 6 sub-counties of Kericho County. Bureti has the highest (7) number of wards while Kipkelion East, Kipkelion West & Sigowet (Soin) have the lowest (4).
• Ainamoi has the highest number (60) of health facilities (22% of Kericho County & 0.42% of Kenya).
• Sigowet (Soin) has the highest number with Faith-Based Health Facilities. (Total of 4 out of 15)
• Sigowet (Soin) has the highest number of Ministry of Health Facilities (Public). (Total of 40 out of 173)
• Ainamoi has the highest number of Private Health Facilities. (Total of 31 out of 83)
• Ainamoi has the highest number of NGO Health Facilities. (Total of 3 out of 5)
