Health Facilities in Kisumu County.

Kisumu County is located in the Nyanza region of Kenya.  In the 2022-2027 government, Dr. Gregory Ganda is serving as the Health Minister for Kisumu county. (This is as of November 2022). He also held this position in the 2017-2022 government. Health Ministers are also known as ‘CEC Member for Health’ or CEC Representative for Health.

CEC stands for County Executive Committee. The committees’ chief executive is the county governor while the deputy chief executive is the deputy county governor. In addition to the health representative, the committee has other representatives (approximately ten in total). They represent other devolved functions listed here. Depending on the county, devolved roles are combined differently.

Kisumu County has 7 Sub-Counties:

In summary, Kisumu County has 353 health facilities spread across the 7 sub-counties. 5.4% of these are faith-based facilities (19) while 41.6% belong to the ministry of health (147). This leaves 7.9% under NGO’s (28) and 45% listed as private facilities (159). Kenya has a total of 14,251 health facilities. Therefore, these figures translate to Kisumu County having 2.48% of the country’s Total Facilities.

Let us look at the numbers in each sub-county.

In Kisumu Central sub-county, there are 117 health facilities. This makes up 33% of the health facilities in Kisumu County and 0.82% of the total number in the country.

Kisumu Central houses the following 6 Wards: Railways, Migosi, Shauri Moyo (Kaloleni), Market Milimani, Kondele & Nyalenda B.

In Kisumu East sub-county, there are 50 health facilities. This makes up 14% of the health facilities in Kisumu County and 0.35% of the total number in the country.

Kisumu East houses the following 5 Wards: Kajulu, Kolwa East, Manyatta B, Nyalenda A & Kolwa Central.

In Kisumu West sub-county, there are 35 health facilities. This makes up 10% of the health facilities in Kisumu County and 0.25% of the total number in the country.

Kisumu West houses the following 5 Wards: South West Kisumu, Central Kisumu, Kisumu North, West Kisumu & North West Kisumu.

In Muhoroni sub-county, there are 38 health facilities. This makes up 11% of the health facilities in Kisumu County and 0.27% of the total number in the country.

Muhoroni houses the following 5 Wards: Miwani, Ombeyi, Masogo (Nyang’oma), Chemelil (Tamu), Muhoroni (Koru).

In Nyakach sub-county, there are 38 health facilities. This makes up 11% of the health facilities in Kisumu County and 0.27% of the total number in the country.

Nyakach houses the following 5 Wards: South West Nyakach, North Nyakach, Central Nyakach, West Nyakach & South East Nyakach.

In Nyando sub-county, there are 46 health facilities. This makes up 13% of the health facilities in Kisumu County and 0.32% of the total number in the country.

Nyando houses the following 5 Wards: East Kano (Wawidhi), Awasi (Onjiko), Ahero, Kabonyo (Kanyagwal) & Kobura.

In Seme sub-county, there are 29 health facilities. This makes up 8% of the health facilities in Kisumu County and 0.2% of the total number in the country.

Seme houses the following 4 Wards: West Seme, Central Seme, East Seme & North Seme.

In conclusion,

• There are a total of 35 wards in the 7 sub-counties of Kisumu County. Kisumu Central has the highest (6) number of wards while Seme has the lowest (4).
• Kisumu Central has the highest number (117) of health facilities (33% of Kisumu County & 0.82% of Kenya).
• Nyakach has the highest number of Faith-Based Health Facilities. (Total of 5 out of 19)
• Muhoroni has the highest number of Ministry of Health Facilities (Public). (Total of 25 out of 147)
• Kisumu Central has the highest number of Private Health Facilities. (Total of 82 out of 159)
• Kisumu Central has the highest number of NGO Health Facilities. (Total of 15 out of 28)
