Health Facilities in Mombasa County.

Mombasa County is located in the Coast region of Kenya. In the 2022-2027 government, Dr. Swabah Ahmed Omar is serving as the Health Minister for Mombasa county. (This is as of March 2023). In the 2017-2022 government, Godfrey Nato held this position. Health Ministers are also known as ‘CEC Member for Health’ or CEC Representative for Health.

CEC stands for County Executive Committee. The committees’ chief executive is the county governor while the deputy chief executive is the deputy county governor. In addition to the health representative, the committee has other representatives (approximately ten in total). They represent other devolved functions listed here. Depending on the county, devolved roles are combined differently.

Mombasa County has 6 Sub-Counties:

1. Changamwe
2. Jomvu
3. Kisauni
4. Likoni
5. Mvita
6. Nyali

In summary, Mombasa County has 360 health facilities spread across the 6 sub-counties. 4.17% of these are faith-based facilities (15) while 16.7% belong to the ministry of health (60). This leaves 3.3% listed as private facilities (273) and 75.8% under NGO’s (12). Kenya has a total of 14,251 health facilities. This translates to Mombasa County having 1.52% of the country’s Total Facilities.

Let us look at the numbers in each sub-county.

In Changamwe sub-county, there are 44 health facilities. This makes up 12% of the health facilities in Mombasa County and 0.31% of the total number in the country.

Changamwe houses the following 5 Wards: Port Reitz, Kipevu, Airport, Changamwe & Chaani.

In Jomvu sub-county, there are 30 health facilities. This makes up 8% of the health facilities in Mombasa County and 0.21% of the total number in the country.

Jomvu houses the following 3 Wards: Jomvu Kuu, Miritini & Mikindani.

In Kisauni sub-county, there are 69 health facilities. This makes up 19% of the health facilities in Mombasa County and 0.48% of the total number in the country.

Kisauni houses the following 7 Wards: Mjambere, Junda, Bamburi, Mwakirunge, Mtopanga, Magogoni & Shanzu.

In Likoni sub-county, there are 55 health facilities. This makes up 15% of the health facilities in Mombasa County and 0.39% of the total number in the country.

Likoni houses the following 5 Wards: Mtongwe, Shika Adabu, Bofu, Likoni & Timbwani.

In Mvita sub-county, there are 101 health facilities. This makes up 28% of the health facilities in Mombasa County and 0.71% of the total number in the country.

Mvita houses the following 5 Wards: Mji wa Kale (Makadara), Tudor, Tononoka, Shimanzi (Ganjoni) & Majengo.

In Nyali sub-county, there are 61 health facilities. This makes up 17% of the health facilities in Mombasa County and 0.43% of the total number in the country.

Nyali houses the following 5 Wards: Frere Town, Ziwa la Ng’ombe, Mkomani, Kongowea & Kadzandani.

In conclusion,

• There are a total of 30 wards in the 6 sub-counties of Mombasa County. Kisauni has the highest (7) number of wards while Jomvu has the lowest (3).
• Mvita has the highest number (101) of health facilities (28% of Mombasa County & 0.71% of Kenya).
• Mvita is has the highest number of Faith-Based Health Facilities. (Total of 5 out of 15)
• Mvita has the highest number of Ministry of Health Facilities (Public). (Total of 21 out of 60)
• Mvita has the highest number of Private Health Facilities. (Total of 72 out of 273)
• Changamwe, Kisauni & Mvita each have the highest number of NGO Health Facilities. (3 Each out of 12)
