Health Facilities in Nairobi County.

Nairobi County is the Capital of Kenya. In the 2022-2027 government, Dr. Anastasia Mutethia is serving as the Health Minister for Nairobi county. (This is as of November 2022). In the 2017-2022 government, Hitan Majevda held this position. Health Ministers are also known as ‘CEC Member for Health’ or CEC Representative for Health.

CEC stands for County Executive Committee. The committees’ chief executive is the county governor while the deputy chief executive is the deputy county governor. In addition to the health representative, the committee has other representatives (approximately ten in total). They represent other devolved functions listed here. Depending on the county, devolved roles are combined differently.

Nairobi County has 17 Sub-Counties:

In summary, Nairobi County has 1,243 health facilities spread across the 17 sub-counties. 8.7% of these are faith-based facilities (108) while 12.6% belong to the ministry of health (157). This leaves 10% under NGO’s (124) and 68.7% listed as private facilities (854). Kenya has a total of 14,251 health facilities. This translates to Nairobi County having 8.7% of the country’s Total Facilities.

Let us look at the numbers in each sub-county.

In Dagoretti North sub-county, there are 108 health facilities. This makes up 9% of the health facilities in Nairobi County and 0.76% of the total number in the country.

Dagoretti North houses the following 5 Wards: Gatina, Kabiro, Kawangware, Kileleshwa & Kilimani.

In Dagoretti South sub-county, there are 46 health facilities. This makes up 4% of the health facilities in Nairobi County and 0.32% of the total number in the country.

Dagoretti South houses the following 5 Wards: Mutu-Ini, Ngando, Riruta, Uthiru (Ruthimitu) & Waithaka.

In Embakasi Central sub-county, there are 55 health facilities. This makes up 4% of the health facilities in Nairobi County and 0.39% of the total number in the country.

Embakasi Central houses the following 5 Wards: Kayole Central, Kayole North, Kayole South, Komarock & Matopeni (Spring Valley).

In Embakasi East sub-county, there are 92 health facilities. This makes up 7% of the health facilities in Nairobi County and 0.65% of the total number in the country.

Embakasi East houses the following 5 Wards: Embakasi, Lower Savannah, Mihango, Upper Savannah & Utawala.

In Embakasi North sub-county, there are 27 health facilities. This makes up 2% of the health facilities in Nairobi County and 0.19% of the total number in the country.

Embakasi North houses the following 5 Wards: Dandora Area I, Dandora Area II, Dandora Area III, Dandora Area IV & Kariobangi North.

In Embakasi South sub-county, there are 53 health facilities. This makes up 4% of the health facilities in Nairobi County and 0.37% of the total number in the country.

Embakasi South houses the following 5 Wards: Imara Daima, Kwa Njenga, Kwa Rueben, Kware & Pipeline.

In Embakasi West sub-county, there are 51 health facilities. This makes up 4% of the health facilities in Nairobi County and 0.36% of the total number in the country.

Embakasi West houses the following 5 Wards: Kariobangi South, Maringo (Hamza), Mowlem, Umoja I & Umoja II.

In Kamukunji (Kamkunji) sub-county, there are 67 health facilities. This makes up 5% of the health facilities in Nairobi County and 0.47% of the total number in the country.

Kamukunji houses the following 5 Wards: Airbase, Carlifornia, Eastleigh South, Nairobi Central & Ngara.

In Kasarani sub-county, there are 76 health facilities. This makes up 6% of the health facilities in Nairobi County and 0.53% of the total number in the country.

Kasarani houses the following 5 Wards: Clay City, Kasarani, Mwiki, Njiru & Ruai.

In Kibra sub-county, there are 90 health facilities. This makes up 7% of the health facilities in Nairobi County and 0.63% of the total number in the country.

Kibra houses the following 5 Wards: Laini Saba, Lindi, Makina, Sarangombe & Woodley (Kenyatta Golf Course).

In Langata sub-county, there are 95 health facilities. This makes up 8% of the health facilities in Nairobi County and 0.67% of the total number in the country.

Langata houses the following 5 Wards: Karen, Mugumu-Ini, Nairobi West, Nyayo Highrise & South C.

In Makadara sub-county, there are 58 health facilities. This makes up 5% of the health facilities in Nairobi County and 0.41% of the total number in the country.

Makadara houses the following 5 Wards: Eastleigh North, Harambee, Makongeni, Pumwani & Viwandani.

In Mathare sub-county, there are 17 health facilities. This makes up 1% of the health facilities in Nairobi County and 0.12% of the total number in the country.

Mathare houses the following 5 Wards: Huruma, Kiamaiko, Mabatini, Mlango Kubwa & Ngei.

In Roysambu sub-county, there are 104 health facilities. This makes up 8% of the health facilities in Nairobi County and 0.73% of the total number in the country.

Roysambu houses the following 5 Wards: Githurai, Kahawa, Kahawa West, Roysambu & Zimmerman.

In Ruaraka sub-county, there are 60 health facilities. This makes up 5% of the health facilities in Nairobi County and 0.42% of the total number in the country.

Ruaraka houses the following 5 Wards: Baba Dogo, Korogocho, Lucky Summer, Mathare North & Utaii.

In Starehe sub-county, there are 121 health facilities. This makes up 10% of the health facilities in Nairobi County and 0.85% of the total number in the country.

Starehe houses the following 5 Wards: Hospital, Landimawe, Nairobi South, Pangani & Ziwani (Kariokor).

In Westlands sub-county, there are 123 health facilities. This makes up 10% of the health facilities in Nairobi County and 0.86% of the total number in the country.

Westlands houses the following 5 Wards: Kangemi, Karura, Kitisuru, Mountain View & Parklands (Highridge).

In conclusion,

• The 17 sub counties each have 5 wards. Nairobi County therefore has a total of 85 Wards.
• Westlands has the highest number (123) of health facilities (10% of Nairobi County & 0.86% of Kenya).
• Langata has the highest number of Faith-Based Health Facilities. (Total of 16 out of 108)
• Kibra has the highest number of Ministry of Health Facilities (Public). (Total of 22 out of 157)
• Westlands has the highest number of Private Health Facilities. (Total of 93 out of 854)
• Kibra has the highest number of NGO Health Facilities. (Total of 18 out of 124)
